I just had to start a thread for this, mainly because I couldn’t find somewhere else to post it. My wife Pepper Mill had an interesting dream the other night. She was trying to cross a bridge, and it was filled with creepy people and things. At one point the roadbed was completely encased, like a tunnel, leaving her with no other way to go. She was moving forward, and suddenly a wall closed down, or crashed down, in front of her. There was writing on it. It read: The Dream is Over Go use the bathroom ---

I’ve never heard of a dream that included a public service announcement. My dreams lately have been both bizarre and inexplicable. ---

I had one last night where I was waiting to get a haircut, but there were like 20 people ahead of me, despite having an appointment. I decided to leave and discovered someone had stolen the case in which I carry my shoes. 😴 ---

That’s delightful. Most dreams don’t really end, because dreamers wake up while stuff is still happening. The other night, just after I finished reading an absorbing and well-plotted mystery novel, I had a dream with a coherent and satisfying beginning, middle and end. I’m sure the author’s careful attention to high school English rules (exposition, climax, denouement and so forth) were a contributing factor. ---

I really blew it in last night’s dream. I not only showed up late for an appointment with the head of whatever graduate program I was thinking of applying to, it was in the wrong place and the wrong city, I was dressed too casually and needed a shave, and I had to compete with some stranger for the large pile of loose change I couldn’t leave behind, most of it pennies. I will never get my PhD and find a job, if this keeps up. ---

It doesn’t have to be a personal and specific anxiety, it can be a general anxiety that comes with living in a world that has a plethora of problems that could bring about our demise. The bridge represents life’s journey, and the “creepy people and things” represent all the problems and dangers that come in the course of that journey. The tunnel-like encasement represents no other recourse but to make that journey despite all of its accompanying dangers. I had an anxiety dream where, for some reason, I was on the middle of a bridge spanning the Cal Sag. It was one of those steel girder bridges that looks like it was built from an erector set. Suddenly, I heard a huge splash to my right, and a creature the size of a van that looked like a giant maggot landed on the roadway with a huge, THWAP!! Then I heard and saw the same thing to my left, and then the process began to gain speed. In a panic, and trapped between these creatures, I got up on the railing and began to scale the girders until I reached the top. I remember feeling relief because there was no way those creatures could follow me. I would just have to wait for help. Then, I woke up. ---

Couldn’t “the dream is over” have been meant in a general way rather than addressing the current dream she was experiencing? ---

I had a really interesting dream many years ago that I still remember the end of. It was a long saga-like dream in which I was on a quest with some other people having all sorts of adventures, the details of which I don’t really remember. Then when the story reached a climax, suddenly the “camera” pulled back, showing more and more of the landscape, until I could see the entire planet. Then I saw that the planet was actually a teapot. A small crack appeared in the teapot and a drop of liquid oozed out. A face suddenly appeared on the teapot, and it licked up the drop with its tongue, then smiled and winked, at which point I woke up.
