Rather than bumping a lumbering behemoth, I thought I’d start a new thread. It’s time, right? Watching Jeopardy tonight I learned that the tuxedo was so named because it was initially worn at the exclusive Tuxedo Club located in the ritzy village of Tuxedo Park located in Orange County, New York. Checking further I discovered that the name is derived from a Native American word (of the Lenape language) p’tuxseepu, which means “crooked water” (river). ---

How can you tell male and female monarch butterflies apart? Males have spots around their wings; females do not. I always thought turtles were amphibians. They aren’t; they are reptiles. ---

I recently found out that the Boston Red Sox were the last major league baseball to break the color barrier and integrate. I am so ashamed. The Boston Bruins hockey team integrated before the Red Sox. ---

I only just learned that between 1959 and 1984, the lovely city I live in, London, Ontario, Canada, was actually the serial killer capital of the world! ������ And I’ll bet most of the people I know here, also have no idea. ---

Or that the spots serve as a warning to predators that it’s a bitter-tasting butterfly? ---

Someone here recently linked to a map of the U.S. that showed various zones and their time periods of average hottest temperatures. For the areas I’ve lived in all my life (coastal or near coastal California), the hottest time of the year is typically about mid-September. We’re the U.S.'s latest zone in the whole year to have its hottest average temperature. Huh. When I was a kid, it always felt like I was going back to school right at the hottest point of the year, but I always thought it was just me feeling steamed and resentful. ---

I just learned that the classes to learn Spanish 21 at the casino I work at are not, in fact, classes teaching you just enough Spanish to be able to deal/play blackjack in Spanish. ¡Veintiuno!
