I knew a girl back in college named Joni Mitchell. I taught a pair of (female) twins named Lovey and Dovey. There was a girl named Chimera (she pronounced it shuh mare uh, but still, sometimes people need to check a dictionary before they give a kid a name they made up). ---

In Moscow, I used to have a British supervisor named Harry Bone (and yes, it took an enormous effort not to laugh when he introduced himself). In one of my English classes, I had a female student named Olessiya Vagina.\* When she handed me her registration slip, the only thing I could think of to say was “Are you sure your name is spelled right…?” \*Pronounced “VA-geen-a” in Russian. It’s Ukrainian for “scales”; cf. German “Waage.” ---

Has anyone actually encountered twins named Lemonjello and Orangejello? Srsly, if that urban legend was as common as everyone says it is, there’d be a set in every American classroom, and there aren’t that many twins to begin with. ---

I attended high school with Michael Jackson I attended college with Robert Kennedy Now I work with Barbara Walters. The Kennedy was no relation to the famous ones, but had been named for the real Robert Kennedy. The other two were coincidental. ---

Always felt bad for one kid in my elementary school. The lone black kid in K-6, there from 1980 to 1985 or so… named Michael Jackson. You can imagine the hell he went through. Had a class in university, a big intro course held in a large auditorium, where the professor insisted on doing roll call every session. What made sitting through that tedious reading-off of names worth it were two brothers, Centurion and Gladiator. Such cool names! “Becky? Ah, Becky. Sarah? Sarah’s not here, okay. Centurion? Oh, there you are Centurion. And there’s Gladiator.” ---
