That’s nothing! My brother cracked the Phaistos Disc when he was eight years old. It says something like “there was this man and he was in a flying saucer and then he had a pet snail and he took it for a walk but there was this other man and he didn’t like him so he gave him a fish”.
Isn’t it funny that icons, intended to be language-neutral and culture-independent, are so hard to interpret in any language or culture? If they had only used text in any language, we could translate exactly!
On my parent’s dishwasher, there is an option to heat the water if the machine decides it isn’t hot enough as provided (a feature which may be disabled). May I offer the suggestion that the crossed-out-thermometer does something similar?
That was my thinking on the crossed-out-thermometer - if you don’t want the washer to heat the water (i.e. run a cold wash only), then push that button!
I am in the US, using a Kenmore washing machine whose symbols are fairly obvious. But I am not very bright when it comes to laundry. So, I wash everything all together using a generic setting. Works for me!
From the first pic, K = high speed spin & water discharge (emptying the washer). I seem to recall that graphic from my MIL’s machine (a Candy) in Ireland. Handy for when you’ve come in out of the rain & want to get your sopping clothes … well, less sopping, anyway.
Yeah, what’s with that? I know that side loading is due to space considerations in Euro houses. Is it because US washing machines are top-loaders and more efficient somehow?
Beats me. I’m in the US, I’ve got a front-loader, and the wash cycles are no longer than a top-loader.
This thread is proving far more fascinating than I ever thought imaginable! Thanks to you all! However, the code is far from cracked, although I have managed to wash some clothes. I’m delighted to hear (from Nanoda and Dottygumdrop) how to get a cold-water wash! The lowest temp on the menu is 40 degrees, and even though I cannot convert centigrade to Fahrenheit, I know that’s pretty hot. Thanks.
Also, about the flower symbol on the dial - in the little drawer where one puts the detergent and fabric softener, there is an actual flower symbol on the section for the fabric softener. As I figured that fabric softener symbol out all on my own, I did not include it in the photos. It does not look like the four-petaled icon on the front of the washer. Go figure.
And yes, the second menu is probably for the hookah smoke-laden fabric as we live over a bunch of cafes and spend a lot of time watching the street (much like one watches an aquarium). One of the nearby cafes is Turkish and those diners are constantly tokin’ on hookahs! So thanks, Rhythmdvl, for your insight!
And as long as the washing cycle is, the clothes still come out dripping wet! So I recrank it back to a spiral with drips. I’ll figure this out eventually.
Thanks, everyone, again. You all have made my move to Budapest a lot less stressful!
Just for the record 40C is 104F and - in washing terms - I would have called that a cool wash.
