It’s so deeply ingrained in the American sports psyche that calling it tacky is rather silly, IMO. Introductions are used to hype up the home crowd, get the stadium loud, and give the home team a boost.
Maybe the Savana Bananas would be a bit much for some folks, but there’s clearly an audience for it.
Booing is part of the game. If you can’t take it, too bad. There’s lots worse than that as been pointed out. Also, fans don’t boo nobodies, I think it’s Reggie Jackson who said that and he’s right so a player should be proud of that: they boo because I’m good. If you did something against your team that cost them a playoff spot or a championship, more often than not it’s a star player, they’ll boo you. Or in the case of Roughned Odor, Toronto fans still boo him years later for punching their player. I rarely boo but when I do, it’s for a good reason. I booed Ryan Braun because of how he handled his positive drug test. I was the only one for some reason. I cheer opposing players when they are good. I certainly would not boo every single opposing player if my team was in the finals.
Sometimes, fans cheer an opposing player such as when Red Sox fans cheered Mariano Rivera as he was mostly responsible for Boston advancing against New York in 2004. I think that was sarcastic but Rivera took it like a pro.
One time I recall a PA announcer being disrespectful to the “visiting” team. I worked at our baseball stadium as the scoreboard operator for the minor league team we had then. There was a weekend series between the teams of the two universities we have. Since I was the only one knowing how to operate the board, I was hired to do so. The university paying for the stadium use used their own PA guy. He was extremely enthusiastic announcing players from his university such as, Dante “THE INFERNO” Smith. On the other hand, he couldn’t be less enthusiastic for players of the other team. I even thought it bordered on disrespectful the way he did it. A rep from that university thought so too and even came up to the control room and confronted the PA guy. But he didn’t care and continued announcing the same way.
