I still wasn’t close, even _with_ the hints. I was thinking arses, instead of loo’s, and was on the wrong track with fist instead of door, etc. If I’d gotten one of them, I might have done better with the others, knowing the theme was naval disasters. Ed refers to our beloved **Ed Zotti** , editor of _The Straight Dope_. Gera is a city in east-central Germany, and when one is old, one is said to be in the winter of his years; hence, Gera old = Gerald. Hey, doing puzzles clears the cobwebs out of your brain, **Davebear**. And don’t feel bad, I have a tough time with **IThinkNot** ’s puzzles too! 🙂 ---

I need to sit down. But first, since this _is_ Callahan’s Place, a toast: I used to work at the shore every summer when I was younger. Unfortunately the water was quite polluted which made the small fish the seabirds ate quite toxic to them, and every day there would be dead seabirds on the beach. My job was to scout the beach from end to end and pick them up and carry them off to the incinerator where they’d be destroyed, for health reasons. I did this for over ten years, and you know, I felt badly for every single one of those birds… And so, gentlemen, a toast: _raises glass_ To all the gulls I’ve lugged before! _smashes glass in the fireplace_ ---
