Got it about 7 hours ago. 1st Gen iPhone. Pain free. Lotsa little neat things (check out the new buttons while playing back podcasts.)

I’m a little disappointed in the updated Bluetooth functioning. The phone still won’t push my phonebook to my car. It also won’t connect to the ipod player in my car, but I suspect that is an issue on the car’s end. I would expect the phone to be able to push my phone book though. The car sits waiting for the phone to initiate the download.

I predict you’ll be waiting a bit. I think the bluetooth improvements were limited to being able to stream stereo audio to bluetooth devices. On an up note, it’ll drop the audio of you get a call. I dunno if it extends to voice dialing, but I think _that_’s a 3gs feature.

Your iphone will also not perform dialysis or make toast.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that the iPhone should be able to initiate the transfer of the phone book to a Bluetooth enabled vehicle that has the capability of storing the information on a harddrive. There are certainly plenty of other less advanced phones that can perform this task.

And that’s the problem. Just because it’s do-able, doesn’t mean they should. I’ve got a bluetooth GPS receiver, why wouldn’t they program the iPhone to use it?

There are no less than 28 bluetooth profiles. ([List of Bluetooth profiles - Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_profile)) Apple has been pretty sluggish in implementing most of them.

Previous to the current version hardware, they left out voice dialing because it _sucks_. It’s error prone or requires training, so they left it out as ahalf-baked feature that wouldn’t work well. I can only hope it works well with the current phone. Likewise, I could see them leaving out address book functionality for a number of non-obvious reasons, not the least of which being: it didn’t work well. (Synchronization with exchange, do you include the home, mobile, beeper, but not fax numbers? How do you interface with the other end so that it works well.)
