Anyone here plan on buying [one?](http://www.apple.com/iphone/) I am and i’m expecting quite a line when it goes on sale at 6pm. I hope to god they have some plan of organizing the masses that day. ---

It has some cool features but it’s first generation and uses GPRS instead of UMTS for datatransfer so it’s real slow for internet use unless you can find a wifi hot spot. No buy for me. ---

I’m self-employed, so it’s a perfect fit for me. I’m all Mac based at home, and oh, how i’ve pined for a device from Apple like this to integrate seamlessly with all my hardware and software. Most of the time I am around a wi-fi spot, but when I’m on the road, I’d only use the email/internet features for simple communication, maps, or the occasional direction/phone number lookup. So the slower internet speeds in that case aren’t a deal breaker for me. The rest of the phone makes up for that and so much more IMHO. ---

I liken the iPhone a bit to some of the recent consumer electronics from Sony, specifically the PS3 (or PSP). Like the PS3, I’d love to have one, but I couldn’t ever justify $600 for a phone, just like I could never justify $600 for a video game system. IMO, both items are worth half that, and while the iPhone will undoubtedly change the paradigm for the cell phone industry as other manufacturers race to come to market with competitor models, I think most people like myself will find other things to do with their money until: 1) they actually need (not want) a new phone and 2) there’s a reasonably priced iPhone available. Reasonable being less than $300. Looks like I’ll be waiting for the iPhone nano … or iPhone v2.0 … or something. ---

[/QUOTE] I was on Cingular until Dec… then I let my contract dry up. So, as of now, I don’t even have a cell. Haven’t since December. I hear a lot of complaints about Cing/ATT… but I’ve never really had any issues with them. I live in the metro-detroit area. I wonder as well what kind of impact this will have on initial sales. ---

Cingular/AT&T customer for the last couple of years here. No complaints with them, but I just bought a new phone, a Samsung ZX-20. It has video and I can run the Opera mini-browser on it, so I’m not in the market to spend $600 on a new phone, even if it opens my beer for me. Otherwise, it looks like the kind of high-tech toy I could play with for hours on end. ---

Interesting that it gets comments about it being a high-tech toy or “just a phone”. And while I realize a lot of the technology has been around for a while, or even a little behind some of the cutting-edge stuff out there, I find it’s the way it’s integrated not only in the phone itself as well as the hardware and software surrounding it is leaps and bounds beyond any other product out there right now. While the multi-touch capabilities and the highly polished GUI inspire the Gee-Wiz factor, it all seems honed towards making this device far more practical and easier to use than anything else. The visual voicemail alone is the kind of stuff that will keep me from pulling my hair out (if I still had any left). ---

I don’t like the idea of it being all touch screen with no keys. If I need to respond to an email I much prefer the tactile feel of a keyboard. Just my .02. ---

[/QUOTE] I do remember … and this is why I didn’t own a first gen iPod either. Doesn’t matter how fancy it is or what it does, whether it’s just a phone or just an MP3 player or both (or as cochrane said, a bottle opener as well). It’s the kind of device only early adopters will purchase until the price comes down … or the holidays come around. It’s pretty easy to see the route Apple will take. I predict a 6G iPod unveiling for the holidays which will have a new design and touchscreen interface (as heralded by iPhone), but it will trump the iPhone on storage capacity, no doubt finally getting past the 100GB storage barrier to address the demand for a widescreen portable movie player that can store more than a paltry few hours of video. Only then will we see some shifts in the pricing, but as with all computing electronics, this will only be followed by something slicker shortly thereafter. I’d like to get an iPhone, but I’m keen to wait and see how it develops, i.e. whether it becomes compatible with the latest high-speed cellular networks, and whether or not the 6G iPod will impact its price. ---

I would absolutely love one. but I am very satisfied with my current carrier and can’t justify switching right now…or can I? I love gadgets and am a sucker for gee-whiz stuff. ---
