iPod Touch!

Exactally a young kid.

I’ve had a 40GB 3G iPod for years, and I have to pick & choose which of my music goes on it. No matter how cool the Touch is, there’s no way in hell I can live with 16GB. Guess I’ll have to wait a couple more years.

I find the idea of being able to use wireless hotspots as one of the selling points. I don’t have a laptop, and don’t really want one, but it’d be nice to be able to surf when I’m getting a coffee without having to purchase an expensive cell phone (which I can’t generally treat with as much safety due to needing it to be accessible).

Yeah, when the iPhone came out, I said , “I’d like one of those, except for the phone.” Meaning, I really want to surf the web on wifi hotspots and take a few movies on the plane, whilst still using my cheap Go Phone for the 3 phone calls I make each month.

And yes, I know there are a handful of handheld devices that give you web access via wifi, but Safari on the iPhone/iPod is the best interface I’ve seen. I’ll definitely be picking one up.

Nothin’ like surfin’ the Dope on my iPhone!

I agree that 16G is not enough. Drop an 80-gig drive in there and sell it for $100 more, and I’d be all over the touch. As it is, I’m disappointed that Apple now has four iPod lines that have small storage space and only one with substantial space.

What exactly does the exclamation “pod touch” mean in Spanish anyway?

I’m not feeling the love. I generally listen to my 30 gig iPod in my car where a touch screen would be dangerous and utterly unnecessary everywhere else due to the fact that I have fat fingers. I don’t need the Wi-Fi feature, either because if I’m going to hang out in a hotspot, chances are I’m there to do some real work, so I’ve got my laptop with me anyway.

It’s the same reason I don’t care about the iPhone. It’s just more, and expensive, baggage.

I’m still using my 20-gig 4G iPod, and I don’t think I’m going to upgrade until it breaks or I lose it. But when I do, I’ll probably go for a not-as-shiny one with more space (my mp3 collection is at about 40 gigs right now).

I’d watch videos on it. Why? Because I ride the subways a lot and it would make for a convenient way to watch a few episodes of a television show, for instance. I tried doing that with my old iPod and the screen is just too small. But 3.5" seems to be a pretty decent compromise between portability and viewing. It’s not like I’m trying to replace my TV here or anything.
As for the size, they pretty much had to keep it at that so they could stay away from using a hard drive based storage. By keeping it to solid state they can keep it super small, decent battery life (that screen sucks up a lot of power I’m sure), but it’s also much more expensive than a hard drive. Hence you can get 160 GB ‘Classic’ for roughly the same as 8GB Touch.
I still want it.

Yeah. I’ve been waiting for this, but I want far more storage.

Stupid question, but the site says “additional fees may apply” for the WiFi. I’m assuming that’s for the iTunes downloads, but the Apple store site isn’t clear. I don’t want to get one unless the actual internet access is free. Anyone know?

I’m guessing (and this is purely a guess) that since the Wi-Fi connectivity is not provided by Apple, but instead by whatever internet connection is linked to a hotspot, Apple is cautioning that there may be a fee, completely separate from Apple, for the final connection to the ISP. In other words, “It’s got Wi-Fi capability, but how you get online is your business, not ours.” There’s plenty of stupid stories out there about someone buying a computer and then demanding to know why they can’t get online. Or buying a modem when they don’t have a computer  and then getting indignant that they weren’t told they had to have a computer to get online.

I assume they are refering to the fact that some Wi-Fi hot spots (such as the ones in Starbucks) cost money to use. Many are free, though.

WAG here, but I assume the WiFi works off a wireless router in your home, or if you’re out and about, then you can get access at hotspots such as Starbuck’s or McDonalds. This is similar to access for a laptop PC with a wireless card or for a Sony PSP or Nintendo DS. Some hotspot providers charge, some don’t. There are a few municipalities that are beginning to offer free city-wide hotspot access.

Of course, YMMV, and all that.

Jesus christ, trendsters. Save your damn money. The 160GB Archos 605 Wifi comes in at under $400. It’s better than the iPod Touch in every possible way, and cheaper. It has:

  • Did I mention 160GB for less than $400?
  • a 4.3" screen as opposed to the iPod’s 3.5" screen
  • a TV Pod that allows it to act as a mobile DVR,
  • a touch screen
  • Wifi connectivity

Ooh, that’s nice! I’m always up for a good iPod alternative. Seems like the web browsing is a little broken, but I’m mostly about capacity, and the screen is an impressive 800 x 480!

I’m really impressed by the Archos 605, and it is definitely the only portable audio/video player that could sway me from the iPod; beautiful, wide, high resolution 480p screen, kickstand so you don’t have to hold it while you watch, decent battery life, nice interface, it’s pretty impressive – but: Features, such as VOB/MPEG-2 and H.264/Podcast codecs, as well as even the web browser, are optional extras. The codecs are $20 a pop, and the browser is $50. That’s an extra $90 if you want complete compatibility and the ability to use that WiFi for more than just streaming content. Then there’s the DVR dock, which is almost a must-buy for this device if you want to take full advantage of its capabilities. That’s another $100 (but since it’s hardware I fully understand). You could easily end up spending $600 on the 605 if you wanted to outfit it right.

It’s a shame that thing (and the iPod) don’t play .avi files. (It’s not a small nickpick for me, most of my digitized movie collection is in that format and it’d be a pain to convert it).
