The most likely scenario in Iran is that the day they tell the U.N. will be marked with a massive anti-American protest in Tehran featuring Ahmedinejad whipping the crowd into a frenzy. This will be a big deal in his eyes.
The West Germans feel the same way. About a year or so after the Wall fell, I ran into an old roommate of mine who was from W. Germany, and still had most of his family living over there. I asked him what they thought about it, and he said they hated it, because all their East German relatives were showing up and sponging off of them.
I’m pretty certain that Doom could squash Iran if he wanted to. We’re talking about a guy who on occassion has defeated cosmic powered beings. 
My 1st tour of duty in germany was shortly after the wall fell. There were a lot of unemployed germans. For a young and (then) single serviceman it wasn’t too bad since there literally were german women hanging around the post looking for an american husband (because we had jobs and money). One german girl I dated briefly told me to my face thats why she wanted to marry an american. I thought it was sad, myself.

Personally I don’t think it is the best use of their cards, they would be a lot better off if they said they would unite the day their economy was at parity with that of South Korea - a bit of a cheek, but a good opening gambit.
Nowadays it’s Russians. Any Yank with cash can order up a hot Russian bride via the Internent. I recently joined Match.com and the first person who answered my wink turned out to be a Russian pretending to live near me but actually still in Russia – or maybe “she” was actually a sock-puppet for some bride-pimping agency. In either case her ad has been removed from the site.
How can they offer the people who run North Korea a better deal than total unfettered power over the entire population and the ability to live in the lap of imported western luxury? Make Kim Jong Supreme Imperial Godhead of the United Korea? Give them a government allowance of 10 blowjobs a day?
The current setup there is that if you are in charge you can have whatever you want.. Given a choice between that and an outside chance of a job as politician, what is any self-respecting apparatchik going to choose?

Somehow I reckon that quite a lot of N. Koreans have twigged that they are not getting the greatest of deals.
If I were a top dog in N. Korea, I would be looking with great interest at how China is handling things.
Definitely. However the NK leadership seem to be taking their cues from Mao, Stalin and Hitler rather than anybody around at the moment (apart from possibly Myanmar). Which is a bit concerning.

As a side note, I’ve recently read more than one article that cites Rajab 27 as being August 21, not 22, which conflicts with Bernard Lewis’ article. I’m sure some Doper out there must know . . . does Rajab 27 coincide with August 21 or 22?
If Iran was planning an attack in the US on 8/22 I think they’d wait until it was actually 8/22 in the US.
