We also have TV footage of Iranians holding banners calling for the execution of the 15 “aggressors”. Are they simple or what?. Don’t they realise what would happen should even one of the captives be harmed.

Time to tell them in no uncertain terms to release the 15 sailors/marines and to do it pretty sharpish or face the consequences.

This is just impotent chest thumping. The only military option we have in nuclear. Our shipping is vulnerable to their defences. They have a large, well trained and well-equipped army. They have no navy to be vulnerable to us and they have effective anti-ship missiles with which to hit our few ships and many tankers. Without american help we are impotent. And any action we take will end up with 15 dead navy.

What precisely do you think chest-thumping will achieve other than make us look foolish? Do you think a nation that lost millions in a recent war is going to be cowed by a few cruise missiles? Do you think military action will have any effect on the politics other than uniting Iran behind what is at the moment a shaky government.

I’m having trouble understanding what you think UK blustering will achieve here.

All we can do is kill Iranians, military and civilian. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Iran is a Muslim country and recently some Muslims have shown themselves to be fairly stoical when it comes to attacks and pretty bloody ruthless when it comes to retaliating.

You keep on talking like Iran is, as Elsie so correctly put it, a bunch of ‘fuzzy-wuzzies’ ready to be suitably impressed by our mighty fire-sticks. You don’t seem to understand that in this situation Iran has the strategic high ground.

It doesn’t care about damage or casualties, it has the ability to inflict heavy losses on our forces either by direct attack or by proxy in Iraq. It holds the 15 hostages in you can be sure, secure circumstances. It could undoubtedly sieze more practically at will in Iraq.

What is it you think we can do militarily that will free them? What military scenarios do you envisage that does not result in them ending up dead? Impotent chest thumping just isn’t going to do it.

What will do it in the end is diplomacy.

And answer with regard to the real world, not your fantasy world where swarthy-looking foreigners melt before the steely British gaze and tremble at the sound of our righteous wrath.

The real world where Iran has a half million man army and 11 million reservists, a fleet of 6 submarines, a variety of ballistic and cruise missiles in hardened coastal batteries and the Hoot supercavitation torpedo that can make 360kph.

How many British lives are you prepared to sacrifice in a doomed attempt to free 15? How many are you prepared to sacrifice because you are ‘angry’?
