Iraq: ISIS or ISIL? And...Caliphate?

It’s classic magical thinking: if only all true believers unite in purity against the corrupt world, the favor of heaven will descend, good will triumph over evil, and an earthly paradise will be established. It sounds laughable until you remember that this more or less describes Nazism, which showed us what sufficiently deluded fanatics can do.

We must be a pretty select group, given that we were all almost certainly born during a relatively small window of time during the “baby bust”. (Anyone who makes this connection not born between, say, '66 and '73?)

Whenever some radical group scores a minor victory in the interminable fighting in the Middle East, they announce that the Caliphate is about to return, with their Fearless Leader as the Caliph. About as meaningful as “the South will rise again!”
