Ireland Vacation recommendations?

Speaking of Holyhead, my wife and I were thinking of taking the train from London to Holyhead and they the quick ferry over to Dublin. Does this seem like a decent plan, or are there better ways of getting to Holyhead?

JosephFinn how long are you staying ? There’s a dopefest planned for 12/13[sup]th[/sup]. in Dublin .

potential attendees include .

Me (duh!)
JohnLarrigan
Ruadh
Coldfire
Trion
Tatertot
Moosegirl
Micilin

Would you be around and fancy coming for a pint or 10 ?

Also I’m going down to Tralee next wkend. Going to a wedding so I don’t know how much of the town I’ll see but I’ll let you know if I see anywhere cool.

The train would be your best bet (apart from flying straight to Dublin ). I know lots of people who have taken a coach and everyone of them has said “never again” .

Disclaimer: I haven’t taken the ferry in a few years.

The train’s not a lot of fun. Most of them require you to change trains (at Crewe or Birmingham, I think) or, if they’re direct, they make so many stops you don’t really save any time. There isn’t a lot of alternative, though (I refuse to even suggest the National Express) unless you want to rent a car.

ewww! Now you tell me.
But anyway, the gardens around Blarney Castle are definitely worth visiting.

Unfortunately, we will be in Dublin only from October 3-6. Sorry!

Pubs in Dublin

Long Hall in Georges St
Keoghs in South Anne st
Both City centre

The Crown in Belfast

Just go to the west of Ireland and stay there as long as possible.

If you are planning a trip, remember that anything over 100 miles away is more than a day trip. The roads are not what you are used to.

London to Hollyhead is 5 hours by train and ferries are 100 mins to 3.5 hours and you probably think that the trains are synchronised with the ferries.

what a load of crap, I knew a young lass that lived in Blarney and she never told me of such a thing. besides they ahve tall fences around the castle and locked gates etc so I don’t believe this for a second.

I’d say goto Newgrange and take me with you! I’ve never been there but I wanted to go there. there are loads of archaeology places like that. Lough Gur is another about 15 miles west (?) of Limerick. Limerick’s another nice town as well.

I can’t say too much about roads as I didn’t really drive there, but I can’t imagine them worse than the roads in England. true they don’t have many expressways but it only takes 4 hours to get from dublin to Limerick by bus.

if you’re still a student get one of those International Students cards, or something like it sorry I can’t remember what it is exactly, because they save LOADS of money off of the trains and stuff. it was well over half off the normal price.

sorry I don’t know many places to go as when I go to new cities I just kinda walk around. I’m not into seeing many museums and stuff like that. Bunraty (I know that’s spelled wrong) north of Limerick was kinda neat too. I also liked Cork, but I think that’s cause of the lass from Blarney!

thank goodness.
also, locals do laugh a bit at the tourists for kissing the Blarney Stone, but when pressed, they’ll admit that they’ve done it too (at least the locals I talked to did)

Newgrange is cool…but forget about seeing the ray of sunlight entering the center of the chamber…the waiting list is booked for years (not that you’ll be there that one day of the year)

The towns of Kilarnny, Kilkenny (sp?), & Galway are cool.

Skellig Islands (try to go during Puffin season)

I hear that northwest Ireland is very nice, but I didn’t make it up to those parts.

I did not make up the story about kids peeing on the Blarney Stone. I heard it from numerous relatives in Kerry and Cork, who urged me and my brother NOT to do the kissing routine.

But hey, it’s fine if you don’t want to believe that kids tinkle on the Blarney Stone, you don’t have to. Feel free to hang upside down and give the rock a big French kiss. Be my guest.

But tell the truth- if the Blarney Stone were in YOUR neighborhood when you were a kid, and you knew that hundreds of tourists were going to kiss it, could YOU have resisted the temptation to do that? (If so, you were a MUCH better little boy than I was!)

didn’t say that you did make it up. but from what I remember the place, as are most castles now, pretty well locked up so people don’t get in and distroy them. Now years ago then yes I could probably believe this but not today. plus I don’t think that the young lady that was with me would have wanted to kiss me after I kissed it!

as for me pissing on the stone I don’t think I would have. I wasn’t that type I would have run around the place though.

anyho enjoy your trip. wish I was going.

I myself couldn’t do it…since I’m terrified of heights.
