I spend time in a rural area and have never been bitten by a poisonous snake

You have to be fairly unlucky to die of the bite of a poisonous snake, even if you are bitten.

Snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous. Poison is ingested/absorbed/inhaled, while venom is injected via bite or sting.
