Is AIDS still considered to be a death sentence?

Not necessarily. You will someday die, to be sure, but that’s the lot of all humans. And if nothing else kills you first, then AIDS will get you. But then, if nothing else kills you first, a papercut will kill you, too.

The point is, that people with AIDS now, and who have access to the latest treatments, are living long enough to die from much the same causes as people without AIDS.

It’s perfectly good form in GQ to ask for a cite. IMO, it is not good form to act offended to be asked for one.

If you don’t have the time to look up a website, or can’t exactly recall where you got the info, that’s fine. But you should just tell us that. It may be much easier for you to re-locate the info than for someone coming in cold.

Er, well, no I don’t think this is Great Debates. I though you might have knowledge of a literature that I don’t. I can see from a following post that you do.

Yes, I know that if I hear something new I can look it up for myself. In fact, I’m very much used to doing this. But I also know that when I’m looking something up it’s real nice to have a starting point. If you want me to play gumshoe, that’s cool, but at least give me something to go on. By way of example if I run a combined search in OVID for AIDS + immunity for the past decade, it returns 791 results–some being very technical. If you were to hint that your reference is recent, about 2 years old, or even say “try before 95”, this significantly reduces the results (thanks labboy it was a big help and I appreciate it).

I additionally am quite idealistic when it comes to giving and sharing information. I know research is a pain in the ass and it can take hours to find a good reference, but I’m not going to hoard it or be bothered by passing it on. Thus, if anyone’s interested:

Host determinants in HIV infection and disease. Part 1: cellular and humoral immune responses Annals of Internal Medicine 134(9 Pt 1):761-76, 2001 May 1.

Is a recent lit review with 188 refernces. I’ll keep digging and if I find the genetic stuff I’ll post it here.

Doesn’t hurt to be nice.

Shite, Colibri wasn’t there before I started.
