My tradition is to start paying attention about a week before Thanksgiving, to see if I will catch it on the radio. When I do hear it, I will smile a gentle and radiant smile of warm familiarity. Then after about four minutes I remember just how interminably long it is, and switch the channel. Later in the evening I will google up the lyrics, and read the last ten verses or so, just for closure. ---

Amazingly, I heard the whole thing yesterday, without even really trying. I had to work yesterday – put in 10 hours – just as I was leaving the parking lot to head home, it started up on the local oldies station. I’ve got about a ten minute commute that I stretched out to fifteen or so just so I could join the kids on the Group W bench. (I caught the last few bars sitting in my car in the garage) ---
