I remember when the song came out. Back when radio was a real thing. We knew all the words, seemed to me. We didn’t listen to it at Thanksgiving because I was a teenager and was not the generation that controlled what happened on holidays. I also saw the film when it came out although it was nothing like as memorable as the song. ---

That old link is dead, so here’s a very late update with a working link. It positions you to a comment on that video with some historical notes. Some people objected to JFK, a Catholic, who would be the first non-Protestant president. They claimed he might take orders from the Pope.” Also, Freberg got an award from a national Native American organization for it. My favorite lyric: “Let him share our Quaker oats / 'cause he’s useful when he votes”. ---

I came here to post this very thing, only to find myself beaten to it just as I was those many years ago when I started this thread and it was merged with another started minutes earlier. That’s what I get for waiting until it comes back around on the guitar. RIP Alice. In her honor I’ll be listening to the song a week early in addition to the usual Thanksgiving tradition. ---
