# Is America calling soccer "soccer" arrogant?

Interestingly, in Israel the word “football” (pronounced very similar to the Spanish “futbol”) refers to the American sport, which is not played here.

Soccer (AKA football) is known as “kaduregel.”

The nickname for the Aussie football (soccer) team is _The Socceroos_.

And the women’s hockey team are called _The Hockeyroos_.

I guess they figured “The Footyroos” would sound stupid…

Soccer is not exactly missing from the English language in the mother country either. If I recall there is a TV show called something like “Soccer Saturday” and/or “Soccer AM”.
