So cultural supremacism is racist?

> I suspect he comes from a very close-minded environment in which he’s been spoon-fed a lot of misinformation. I think he really does believe that the treatment of East Asians in America is comparable to the treatment of blacks.

At 1865 blacks and Asians had roughly the same amount of social standing and blacks (as they were technically at least citizens) had better political rights. Both blacks and Asians suffered lynchings, mob violence, and so on. A large segment of the Asian population moreover suffered internment which blacks never suffered. If there were more racist actions against blacks than Asians its simply because the former were more numerous. You can’t say culture has had no role in giving Asians overall a better position in American society and life than blacks.

**Qin Shi Huangdi** , I grant that the response to your OP was almost unanimous, but you should start another thread if you want to discuss African and Asian cultures and discrimination and so on.

This explains a lot. It’s cool. Curtis is just exploring ideas that are common within this age. It’s part of self-discovery.

So a culture that promotes hard work and obedience to law is not better than a culture that in general encourages suspiscion of the police and even defiance of it and heroically portrays those who do it (via music)?

Holy crap, Qin, are you completely disregarding the very real history of oppression and profiling that has happened in some of the inner cities that gave birth to the music you are alluding to? We are all witness to power struggles in society and if you are broad-brushing an entire race based on a sub-genre of music then while you are at it, malign the Irish, the Scots, the Appalachian region, and oh, yeah, every other cultural group which demonstrates subversion via art.

Geez. How many people have to tell you yes, your OP is skewed racist before you hear them?

And while we are at it, you are a couple hundred years late. The spirituals and work songs sung by slaves weren’t expressing happiness at working all the live long day.

When you attribute this to race? Yeah, I’d say that’s bigotry. I can’t believe you don’t see it.

When you compare two CULTURES, it can be in the spirit of scientific enquiry, ethnocentrism, racism, nationalism, or any number of other things.

When you compare two RACES, it’s pretty much racism.

So talking about Asian-American vs. American Black attitudes towards the rule of law in its historical context = interesting discussion. Concluding that respect for law is better than entrenched disrepect for law = valid conclusion, though not absolute and I’m sure there would be a lot of dissent.

Saying Asians (in general) are better than Blacks (in general) and pointing to a subset of the population (Korean-Americans or Chinese-Americans; American Blacks) is both racist and bad logic, as the part does not represent the whole. (And where do you put people who are both Black and Asian?)

What two cultures are you referring to here? Please tell me you don’t believe all Asian cultures promote hard work and obedience while…:shudders:…all Black culture does not? Can’t be what you mean, is it?

You’re right. I’m sure Curtis was talking about the Calabrian tradition of songs celebrating the 'Ndrangheta, [La Musica della Mafia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%27Ndrangheta#.27Ndrangheta_in_popular_culture). Right, Qin Shi? Hmmm?

Since when is ‘trust for police’ a virtue? When they are way more likely to murder your child for reaching for his wallet than a white person because of their skin color, explain to me why the police and the criminal justice system SHOULD be respected by their victims?

One of my first memories ever is hearing my uncle moan while being beaten in his jail cell while handcuffed. His ‘crime’ was the kids continued to party loudly after the police told them to break it up. There is a disgusting history of police violence aimed at blacks in this country, that you would hold some blacks’ suspicion of the system against them shows youre either incredibly ignorant about it, or just too bigoted to empathize with a group you obviously dislike.
