Mencia is appearing at a local venue. I’ve seen him on TV…is he better live? I like standup comedy, but in your opinion-is he worth sixty-three dollars?:rolleyes: ---

Carlos Mencia is pretty dreadful; somehow I doubt you’ll find much support here for paying $6.30 to see him, much less $63. ---

Though I have never seen/heard Carlos Mencia’s act (we dont have cable, and I am not sure what movies he’s been in) I too have heard (here on the Dope, and probably other places as well) that he is a pariah among comedians, because he is a “joke thief”… How did this ugly reputation get started? Is there a video of him ripping off other peoples material? Is he still doing this, or was this something from his past? * * * Please dont think I am defending his actions (I literally would not know who he was if he knocked on my door, and I certainly dont like anyone taking credit for something that is not theirs) but this reputation he has must be pretty well known, if even someone as out of the loop as myself is familiar with it. ---

Why ask us, for crying out loud? Either you think he’s funny or you don’t/ If you DO, screw the naysayers on the SDMB. If you don’t, ignore his fans. If you don’t know anything about the guy, don’t pay to see him. See him on TV and get a feel for whether you’d like him or not. P.S. What do I care if his jokes are original? If he’s a joke thief, that’s his colleagues’ problem. They can sue him or beat the snot out of him. It’s not my problem. Some comedians insist Denis Leary stole his whole schtick from Bill Hicks- they may even be right. But if I LIKE the schtick, what do I care where he got it from? ---

You stole that joke from George Lopez, didn’t you? .. There are youtube videos comparing some of his material to earlier material of other comics. As for the OP - I have no idea how Mencia is live. I heard him on the radio one time and thought he was pretty funny, but I think Mind of Mencia is awful. I’m really not sold on the “he’s a huge joke thief” but I think he’s not nearly as edgy as he likes to think he is, and has very predictable humor. In other words, he’s a DEET-duh-DEE when it comes to comedy. ---
