How reasonable was the expectation that the original experiment should have worked? The Wiki article on cold fusion is not clear. It says that the experiment was done because Pons and Fleischmann thought it could result in nuclear fusion, yet says that the results were dismissed in part because “there were no theories that could explain a positive result”. Was Pons and Fleischmann’s expectation of success based on a solid theory?
