# Is Columbia a manifestation of Liberty?

And ‘Dove’ was coincidentally (or not) the name of the boat of global circumnavigator[Robin Lee Graham](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Lee_Graham), who did a three-year voyage in the late 1960s.

Prior to this thread, I had considered Columbia to denote the United States. Much like a bear for Russia or John Bull for England. Such symbols used to appear often in political cartoons.

Looks like the term is “[national personification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_personification)”. And indeed Columbia appears on the list for the US.
