I’m not sure if this is the better forum than IMHO but because the topic is a celebrity I am posting here I believe that Mr. Carey is a fellow doper. My reasons behind this are 1. Mr. Carey is an intelligent person and many intelligent people are drawn to this list like a moth to a flame 2. At the tapings of The Power of 10 he takes time to answer some questions from the audience. I asked him a variant of the plane on the treadmill question and he gave the answer that the board worked out as being correct. While I wished he had said Hi Opal or when you come back bring pie or even Gotcha Ya! to show without a doubt he is a doper I am satisfied with my experiment. It’s only a whisper of a shred of mere anecdotal evidence your way, but I remember a doper claiming to be quite well known, to bolster some point they were making on the nature of celebrity. I don’t unfortunately remember the Doper’s name, and he was kinda scoffed away with ‘Yeah, rights’ and 'Who, then?'s Hardly proof that Drew Carey walks among us, but… Hi Drew! ---

The only celebrity that I think there’s proof of having at some point logged onto the Dope was Weird Al Yankovic- no idea if he was ever a member, but he actually did refer to it at some point. No cite, but you can search up the thread where the details are given. And it’s rumored that Angelina Jolie expressed interest in adopting one of the younger Dopers, but I can’t remember offhand if it was Clockwork and Candy or Diosa. In either case, there was an astrological problem that prevented it. ---

While not exactly as familiar as Drew Carey, someone who is well-known among Dopers has posted here in the past. Jim Beaver, who played Whitney Ellsworth on the HBO series “Deadwood”, has researched the death of former “Superman” star George Reeves and had served as an unpaid consultant for the film “Hollywoodland”. He posted in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=380703) under the name “jumblejim”. Start at post #8 for Mr. Beaver’s first post. ---

I’ve often wondered how many celebrities or famous people or whatever you want to call them post here. It’s come up before as a topic, I know. ---

What would happen if one of them came out of the celebrity closet, as it were? As long as they didn’t go into IMHO sharing stories about hookers and blow, I don’t see any reason for them to be fearful. If there’s any online crowd who wouldn’t be fazed by celebrity, I imagine this is it. Not least because–sorry–celebrities are kinda boring compared with Qadgop, CK Dexter, Tamerlane, and a score of others. If Drew Carey came in spouting off in my favorite thread about Jewish medieval prison doctors, I’d be, meh, whatever, Drew. ---

[/QUOTE] To be fair, I believe a number of message boards were all strangely obsessed with that question (with many people approaching the problem with an almost religious fervor that I never quite understood) at around the same time. ---

Also, the “correct answer” hardly requires any special skills or knowledge to get. If Drew has any idea at all about aeroplanes he could have came to that answer with a few moments thought. ---

Let’s suppose for example that Drew Carey is a doper and revealed himself. What would happen if another poster were to suddenly say “Hey, I made a joke in such-and-such post and then you made the same joke in one of your shows! You stole my joke! I demand credit and compensation!” I remember hearing this as a potential issue (many) years ago back in the days of the CompuServe forums so I have no idea if it is still the same now that the Internet has grown ubiquitous, but if so it could limit the desire for some people to reveal themselves. Just about everybody on the internet plays the game of pretending that anything associated with a site is exclusive to that site and so any mention of it is a reference. I imagine that if there are any celebrities on the Dope, the anonymity would be part of the appeal. So I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for them to out themselves. And anyway, _I’m_ Spartacus. ---
