As a Northeastern elitist born in Connecticut and raised in RI, I must say that I think of Bush as more of a New England WASP. I think it’s because, from my personal experience of Texans, it would be vastly unfair to those mostly decent and charming people to characterize Bush as a Texan, but he fits right in with some of the rich WASPy snobs from around here that I’ve known.
I think this is one of the key differences between W. and his dad, actually. Like it or not, there seems little doubt W. is a “real” Texan.
Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky & lived for a while in Indiana before winding up in central Illinois, yet we in Illinois consider him one of our own.
Ronald Reagan was born & raised in Illinois yet is considered “from” California.
Where is a president really “from,” if not where he lived immediately before taking occupancy of the White House?
Or for that matter, where is anyone really “from”?
Walt Disney: born in Illinois, lived for a few years in Marceline, Missouri, then in Kansas City, Missouri, then wound up in California. Is he “from” Illinois, Missouri or California?
Samuel Langhorn Clemens (Mark Twain): Born & raised in Missouri, spent quite a while in California, yet the home where he lived most of his adult life is in New England somewhere (Connecticut, I think). Is he “from” Missouri, California or [New England state]?
