No argument there. I’m not excusing the behavior in some of these stories. Just saying that the motivation leading to poor behavior seems (at a glance, don’t know these people) to go beyond normal pickiness. That’s still no reason for most people to throw a public fit, break up an event, etc especially if they’re well aware of what they are and are not willing to eat.

A typical, grown adult man having a melt down in a grown up restaurant, with other grown people enough to leave and walk to go to Burger King is not right. Obviously he hasn’t matured enough to be out with other grown adults and got what he deserved. Wonder if he had the wine before he left the adult restaurant?

> 'tis mental illness, methinks. Especially if the observed addition of food coloring changes it such that she will eat it, now that it’s no longer white.

I’d say it is a brain glitch that she is able to work with. She doesn’t have meltdowns if there isn’t something she can eat, she deals with it like a neurotypical adult would. She asks about the menu or venue beforehand and if there really isn’t anything she can eat, she will stop at a fast food place and eat on the way.

We both cracked up over the ice cream thing. We were seriously desperate, we were too high to drive and it was too hot to walk to the Junction and we were starrrrrving, dude. Screaming munchies are not to be trifled with, LOL!!!

Once she mentioned that she blamed her parents for this because they were in the “your kid will eat it when they get hungry enough” camp and would tell her that if she didn’t want to eat what was served, she could go hungry. So she did.

She said thought they should have forced her to try different foods because she always felt left out when people were talking about yummy food she couldn’t have.

I asked her what would happen if I pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t eat a bowl of mashed potatoes and she said she would probably get shot for refusing or for puking the first bite all over the table.

She no longer blames her folks for it. Now she blames her older brother who pushed her down the stairs and gave her a concussion when she was three. I, of course, agree with this more logical explanation because her brother is a jerk and should be blamed for anything and everything.

Tbf, though, isn’t it recognized that head/brain injury in early childhood can cause some neurological disorders, even if the injury isn’t very severe?

Of course, I recognize that it’s still far too vague as an etiology of a particular problem in adulthood; after all, all little kids hit their heads on something at some point. Just saying that the linking of brain glitches like random food aversions to early brain injury isn’t prima facie absurd.

Thank you for the very kind reminder to not make fun of brain injuries because they are not a joke.

But…it is still better that she blames her asshole brother than her folks for something that is nobodies fault.

Not if it has been cooked.

Heinz Ketchup has 3.6 mg of vitamin C per tablespoon, and scurvy can occur if one’s average daily intake of C falls below 10 mg. So, not the best source, but not insignificant.

_Ketchup_ is arguably veggie-adjacent. “Catsup” describes the situation when your Siamese are up in the rafters. 🐈‍⬛

Certain orthographically deviant weirdos may claim that “catsup” is the same thing as “ketchup”. They are wrong.

Normal cooking does not destroy vitamin C. Extracting into a liquid and boiling it in a reactive vessel does. You can definitely get vitamin C from vegetables and sauces cooked in normal ways designed to make them edible for human consumption.

[Vitamin C | The Nutrition Source | Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/vitamin-c/#:~:text=Vitamin%20C%20can%20be%20destroyed,the%20liquids%20are%20not%20eaten).

True, cooking doesnt always destroy all of it- it depends heavily on the method, temp and cooking time-
_Vitamin C can be destroyed by heat and light. **High-heat cooking temperatures or prolonged cook times can break down the vitamin**. Because it is water-soluble, the vitamin can also seep into cooking liquid and be lost if the liquids are not eaten._

Our Luc (dachshund) would eat anything. The semiannual Wiener Dog picnic had a Bobbing for Wieners competition where sliced hot dogs were put in a shallow plastic container of water. We thought he’d be really reluctant to stick his head in the water. But, nope. He went straight for 'em. He beat every other dog, until he ran into Baby Love – the undisputed champeen!

On a related note, I once read a book about the history of pellagra (niacin deficiency) and they mentioned a person who was “cured” by getting a blood transfusion, so this doctor, at least for a while, used them to treat pellagra. That unit of blood had enough niacin in it to temporarily relieve the symptoms.

For those of you who don’t know, it used to be rampant in the Deep South, especially among people whose diets consisted mainly of variations of cornmeal. The disease is/was almost unheard of in Central America, because there is a process they follow that not only makes corn more digestible, but also converts the niacin into a form that is more absorbable by the GI tract. A while back, I was lurking on [findagrave.com](http://findagrave.com) and found an obituary for a little girl in the Deep South who had died during the Great Depression. A death certificate was posted, and the COD was “Pneumonia, secondary to scurvy, beriberi, and pellagra.” That poor child starved to death.

I know one very wealthy man who owned apartments, hotels, restaurants, fancy homes, resorts and successful businesses. He could often be found eating alone at one of his restaurants. Generally eating the chicken fingers. I can barely eat them myself without good sauce.

Disclaimer: I am not a guy.

After my son died all I could eat was pop tarts and chicken strips/popcorn chicken/chicken pattie sandwiches.

I occasionally could branch out into pasta with tomato sauce.

This lasted a good while - maybe a couple years.

I gave up pop tarts totally over a year and a half ago and will probably never eat them again.

I am now in the sandwich/salad/soup/pasta stage where I eat variations of the same thing every day.

I will eat different foods occasionally when I go out to eat.

I will cook on the rare occasion. I made potato soup last Saturday and just finished it up today. I eat what I cook until it is gone.

Food just doesn’t interest me very much.

I sort of know a couple of guys and gals like this. They don’t ONLY eat chicken fingers, but they have pretty restrictive diets. I dont think they’re “spoiled” or have ARFID. They just seem very basic. They drive Toyota Camry’s, listen to only Top 40 music, and work in management. No color in their apartments. I kind of like women like this. Women with more sophisticated palates tend to be more high maintenance. And into stuff like “high art”. I’d rather deal with more simple women who are easier to entertain.
