Evaporated milk is another matter entirely. _shudder_

I don’t eat black pudding, but I put [HP sauce](http://www.higherdesign.com/brownsauce/hpsauce.htm) on toad in the hole. HP is also the sauce of choice when it comes to bacon butties.

Apart from my funky sammich, I only use salad cream in place of mayo (which I detest).

Regarding Patrick O’Brian novels…what are spotted dick, spotted dog and drowned baby?

I spend quite a large part of my personal life tryiong to convince people that British food has an undeservedly bad reputation. I think I may have put the cause back a bit here:

But while I’m Here:

Fabulous English/British Food

Pork Pies
Branston Pickle
Gherkins
Proper sausages
crisps
Twiglets
Digestive biscuits
Marmite
Suet puddings

Appaling stuff:

Angel delight
Luncheon meat
Bisto
Camp coffee
UHT milk
Swan
Any others?

Spotted Dick is basically a sponge pudding with raisins/currants/sultanas in it ( the ‘spots’ - I don’t know (and don’t want to know) where ‘dick’ comes into it)

that sounds a lot ruder than I intended… moving on…

spotted dog I have never heard of, but I can imagine it is some variation on the above (possibly a main course version instead of a dessert?)

drowned baby sounds vaguely familiar although I’ve never had it… I think it refers to something fairly alcoholic… i’m not sure what the ‘baby’ is made of.

oh, and yes Toad in the hole is real food - one of my favourites. It is sausages baked in yorkshire pudding, which is… well, batter , basically.

Black Sausage is a thing best not mentioned…

Toad in the hole is sausages baked in a batter pudding (like Yorkshire Pudding) and it is the very thing especially with Colman’s english mustard.

Black pudding is blood sausage and you eat it in America called boudin

Spotted dick is a suet sponge pudding (the spots are raisins). Usually served with custard (ambrosia tinned for preference although Birds is good if you can be bothered with the faffing about)

A drowned baby is public school slang for a pudding in a sea of custard. (how do you make a dead baby float? You need two scoops of dead baby and some cream soda)

Spotted dog is beyond me I’m afraid.

I don’t have the slightest idea what you wrote.

Suet is animal lard. I know what a rasin is, and ambrosia.
Other than that, I am lost.
Faffing?

I would have to move Suet Puddings, Angel Delight & Bisto to their alternative lists. Camp Coffee I’ve never heard of( but I don’t drink coffee), But what is swan? The only Swan I can think of is Swan Vesta’s, but they are matches, so I’m guessing you’re thinking of something else… surely not the actual bird?

Angel Delight is yummy - Instant Whip is foul!
Semolina with jam and evaporated milk - yum!

other good stuff:
Cornish Clotted Cream
Cornish Clotted Cream Ice Cream
Treacle Tart
Fish & Chips (no other country gets this right)
Stilton Cheese
Caerphilly Cheese
bad stuff:
british curry - by which I mean the yellow stuff with swede and raisins in, made with ‘curry powder’, not the stuff you buy in indian restaurants
anything with suet in it.

AFAIK, **Spotted Dog** is a euphemism for Spotted Dick, adopted by restaurateurs and cookbook writers when they finally copped on that - heh heh heh - Spotted Dick sounds like a diseased penis.

“To faff” is to do stuff. Or to be ineffectual or flustered. To appear to do something without doing anything at all.

[Camp coffee](http://www.sybertooth.com/camp/) is this weird, sweet, condensed coffee liquid (resembles a Worcestershire sauce bottle) with an imperialist label on the front. They still sell it, but I think they’ve changed the label.

Another big up for Toad in the Hole. It’s fantastic.

The batter is made in a similar manner to pancake batter, but because of the heat from roasting it, rises around the sausages and goes crispy. Pure total and utter bliss. I eat mine with onion gravy.

Non-English people - make it tonight! It’s easy! And delicious! [Here’s a recipe for you](http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/db/3/T/toadintheholewithroa_9437.shtml). You might need a conversion chart.

Alright, I saw “spotted Dick” on Jamie Oliver this weekend. The history of the name is that it was named for dalmations…“spotted dog”. But dogs hundreds of years ago were often called “Dick” (perhaps Rover was out of favour) so it was called “Spotted Dick”. I won’t attest to the truth of this, but it’s History According to Jamie.
