Huckabee did the eulogy for my grandfathers funeral in Pine Bluff in the early 80s. He was pastor of the Baptist church of which my grandfather was a nominal member.
He didn’t know my grandfather, so it didn’t really amount to much.

Ain’t easy or reliable, of course. But consider that a “real” candidate, as opposed to an outside-the-bubbler like Huckabee, has a ton of people looking for anything that will make them look bad. If the candidate still looks good under those conditions, he probably really is pretty good.
But a willingness to put his own religious beliefs above a Constitution he’d have to swear to uphold, including the part about faithfully executing the laws, would have to be disqualified from getting my vote.
Huckabee may well be a very nice and sincere man, but that is not qualifications for a president. I know many nice guys I wouldn’t vote for. I want someone who will represent all of Americans and not just push the Radical right’s agenda. We have that now and see how things are? If we want more of the same then Okay?
Monavis
THEY ARE NOT CANCELING ORIGINAL MONOPOLY!
Are you one of the Parker Brothers? I guess you would know.
FWIW, I heard him a few weeks back playing “Not My Job” on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me - and he came across as a sincerely nice guy, who was also quite funny. If I agreed with him on the issues, I’d vote for him in a heartbeat.
Ya know…this is actually quite a compelling argument. (We’re going off on a tangent here, that might be suited for a separate thread, but what the hell.) If a president respects the constitution, separation of powers, checks & balances…lets scientists run the EPA and the FDA without political meddling…lets the Justice Dept prosecute real crimes, not political ones…then such a president could do a lot more good than he would do harm. I might be inclined to vote for such a person regardless of his personal beliefs, and trust in the separation of powers.
(A semi-related thought: if there’s ever another YouTube driven debate, I would ask the Democratic candidates how they plan to undo the harm done by the Bush administration wrt civil liberties, separation of powers, our standing with other nations and the Geneva Convention)
They would accomplish that just by not being Bush. So, for that matter, would any responsible Republican.
But we do need to look for more than that, or else the decision isn’t narrowed down at all.
Well, if he said that, he’s wrong. Only one was, the Rev. John Witherspoon of New Jersey. Great guy; I played him a college production of 1776: John Witherspoon - Wikipedia
Thought I’d resurrect this thread, now that Huckabee has won big in Iowa.
To quote Bill Maher (who was speaking about someone else):
Sure, he’s a nice guy. But there’s a difference between a nice guy and a great leader.
George S. Patton was a great leader.
Dick Van Patton is a nice guy.
But you wouldn’t send him to defeat the Germans.
Jon Stewart seemed quite taken with him.
After the stuff with Romney with the “I refuse to show this attack ad that I am now showing you to show you how bad the attack ad is that I refuse to show!” I have a hard time considering him a “nice guy.”
Perhaps many of them were Deacons of their respective Churches, and that’s what he meant. That doesn’t sound like something he’d ad-lib if he didn’t have something to back it up with.
He seems genuine to me. As for being a YEC, I suspect he is. He definitely doesn’t “believe” in evolution, but he isn’t a Biblical literalist. Still, he sounds pretty much like a YEC the way he talks about things. I’m sure that will come up as he gets more scrutiny.
That is surprising given the ADL’s opinion of Huckabee and the concentration camp comments on the radio.
I doubt he will retract it.
What is your cite intended to prove? If it’s that Huck was correct, please provide two more missing arguments: 27/56=most and religious-related education=clergyman.
See for yourself.
My husband has zero patience for Christian conservatives, but he saw Huckabee on The Daily Show and said he was extremely charming and funny.
He’s a politician.
He opposed raising the minimum wage in Arkansas, his explanation being a sarcastic,
“Why not make it twenty dollars?”
He refused to sign a bill providing tornado relief because it contained the words, “Acts of God”. He is a mean, arrogant fellow who doesn’t explain or apologize, just says you are wrong and he is right.
Has he given plans for his 23% sales tax that replaces the income tax? Would poor folks pay that on a used car? A mobile home? I don’t have a problem with Bill Gates paying it on a mansion, but what about the guys in the delta who don’t make enough to pay income tax paying 23% on food?
My husband does not generally like any politicians, certainly not religious righties.
