Sure you can. Generally, I’d agree that it’s a good long-term strategy, and the odds are on your side, but plenty of people have lost everything they had in real estate.
One easy “extra payment” option, especially if you get paid every two weeks, is paying bi-weekly rather than monthly. Because there are 52 weeks in a year, by making a half-payment every two weeks you’ll wind up making 26 half payments, or 13 payments, in a year, as opposed to the usual twelve. That extra payment all goes to the principal. Just by making that extra payment, you’ll shave about 6-7 years off the length of a 30-year loan, and you’ll wind up paying a lot less in interest.
