Do you really see alot of people typing “ATM, machine”?

I work the registers plenty. I make sure not to add “number” after “PIN” because I’m sick of douchbags correcting me.

I see you’re familiar with my local Safeway.

I’ve given up on the PIN number, VIN number, ATM machine, etc. I’ll save my intense outrage for people doing things like parking in the fire lane and throwing cigarette butts on my lawn.

Nitpicking the difference between “PIN” and “PIN number” sounds like poor manners to me.

The other day, I was waiting in line at a store and I noticed the woman in front of me was being charged twice for the same item. I pointed that out and I think all three of us were embarrassed by our behaviour: the cashier (because he made the mistake), the woman (because she wasn’t paying attention) and me (because I was sticking my nose into other folks’ business).

Yes, that’s _exactly_ what everyone’s been saying. Let them stew in their redundancy, the little till tarts. Bwa ha ha haa.

Real answer: yes, it’s rude - and ridiculous - to correct them. I corrected someone on a point of history in a social situation the other day and realised even while I was doing it that I came across as a trivial pedant, that it frankly didn’t matter - and have been kicking myself about it ever since. Correcting “PIN number”, however, tempting, is even worse.

Heheh, **Eve** , that reminds me of a story from my youth. I was around 11 or so, and out grocery shopping with my mom at a locally-owned supermarket. We were looking for milk, and I noticed the sign for skim milk said _Skin Milk_. I started laughing and pointed it out to her. Whatever, shit happens, I was old enough to start noticing misplaced apostrophes too. I figured we’d have a laugh and move on.

Anyway, she unexpectedly affected an air of disgusted pedantry and went out of her way to tell every single employee we encountered after that about the mistake (as though it was their fault, none of them were managers and I’m sure they didn’t do the pricing) to correct their sign. It really, really embarrassed me. I felt like it was my fault she was being such a bitch to these people.

OP, you do not want to be that pedant.

ISTM that you’re the one that’s assuming that they’re ignorant when they use a perfectly accepted if somewhat redundant phrase.

A misspelling would certainly fit with the theme of the rest of the quoted post.

When I was in grade school we had a sink in the back of the room, and next to it was a liquid soap dispenser. One day it ran out. The teacher asked one boy to put a sign on it that “soap” so that the janitor would refill it.

I pointed out to him that his sign actually said “soup.” I laughed about it. The teacher got all up in my grill about how everyone makes mistakes and I shouldn’t laugh at others. Come on, that shit’s funny to a nine year old. And he was laughing harder than I was!

Great, now I’m hungry for soup.

dude, it’s not like I would be shouting at her, waving my arms, and causing a scene …

at the very most, I would lean across the register, smile winsomely, and murmur the correction in a soft undertone ..

and if she was _ **really** _ pretty, maybe ask her for her phone no. as well …

Oh please, ask her for her phone number after you correct her for saying PIN number. Please, do it and report back here. I’m begging you.

By the way, if you want to be a trivial pedant, shouldn’t you be capitalizing your sentences?

Good plan. People love being hit on by people that point out their flaws. If her pants make her butt look big, you should probably tell her that as well.
