Is it bad to watch a Cat stalk and consume large quantities of birds?

I hear they’re awfully greasy, though…

That’s what IW means by prepared properly. A roasting rack, on a draining rack covered with pierced foil, will give you a juicy roast goose and a panful of heavenly goose fat. Goose fat will yield lovely rouxes, gravies, and fat for sauteing. Some folks even swear by goose grease as a skin moisturizer. A pan of stuffing (dressing) made with goose fat is something you won’t soon forget. Sweet Mercy Magruder! Mrs. Cratchit knew.

In the UK there has apparently been a serious drop in the numbers of song birds,a lot of this has been blamed on domestic cats and the explosion in numbers of foxes which up until recently were primarily a rural animal but are now urban hunter/scavengers.

The trouble is cats and foxes are so much more noticeably fluffy and cuddly then Sparrows and other small birds and the sentimental wont hear of feral cats and foxes being culled .

And I am speaking as an ex serial cat owner.l

How come nobody’s pointing a finger at the bird-feeder owners? Not only are they creating a larder for small predators (not to mention the tons of bird poop that accumulate) they are making these birds dependent on an unnatural food source. This is already becoming a problem in some areas with hummingbird feeders – the hummingbirds spend so much time at the feeders, the flowers they normally feed on don’t get pollinated, and die off. Then the feeder-owners move away from their summer homes, the feeders go empty, and the hummingbirds die off.

My neighbor has several bird feeders, and for a while there was a black cat who would occasionally snack on the birds. I used to get a kick out of sitting outside and hearing rustlerustle*SQUAWK!!! Ah, the circle of life in action. The cat would also chase lizards, who would often come skittering across my patio (usually sans tail) and hide in my laundry room – I guess my patio became known as the official Lizard Sanctuary.

Haven’t seen the cat in a long time, however. Maybe a coyote ate it…

I found a feral kitty in the woods about 5 years ago. He was a different kind of cat. faster, rougher and better killer than any cat I have ever seen. When he started to go out there was a burgeoning rat problem in the neighborhood. he cleaned them all out. They have never came back. He did eat some birds even though he was addicted to Super Supper.

You have a cite for any of this?
