Is it just me or is Reddit not worth the trouble of actually posting to (they make it non-easy to become a regular user)

Oh huh- can you explain why they think that’s an important censoring act to do?

Not satisfactorily. It’s something that annoys a lot of us, but apparently is a setting which can’t be changed.

My wild-ass guess is that Discourse’s programmers felt that it was somehow redundant or obvious if one quotes the entire previous post.

I just went to look at my Reddit account (I haven’t been on in a few weeks). I’m sitting at 9.3K Karma, one-quarter of which was due to just four posts I made in fairly busy subreddits (two in r/nfl, one in r/baseball, and one in r/MapPorn). Three of those were informative (but non-controversial) posts, and the fourth must have just struck people as funny.

Another thing I wanna say is that Reddit lacks a “General Topics” forum comparable to FQ or MPSIMS here, I mean they have ones considered “General Topics” but there’s multiple ones to goshdang pick from and even if you do pick one you find out that a) you need those damn Karma Points or b) oh you can’t post in here it’s invite only, and even if I post in one of the other, I dunno, 50 forums claiming to be “General Topics,” whatever I post is not considered “General Topic” enough or is considered too “General” a Topic to post there or it violates this random rule or this random thing or or or…

I mean they don’t make it easy folks :upside_down_face:

Here’s a question related to this topic- what message board has the most and best posters but is comparable to the intimate size and small number of forums as this board, SDMB?

You ain’t gonna find anything better than this board right here anywhere on the internet.

BTW, you can get around the quoting-the-entire-previous-post problem by deleting some insignificant part of that post, such as the period at the end of a sentence. However, it’s likely that you only really need to quote a subset of that previous post, so quote less if you can. For example, I only quoted the question you asked and not your entire post.

almost as unfriendly as this place is to new posters

This is incorrect. There are plenty of them but they are mostly semi-secret but you’ll get invited to them if someone notices you. They are informal, people know one another, international and great for asking general questions and chatting about life. There is one called r/centuryclub which is open to anyone who has accumulated enough karma and isn’t a dick. I presume that this isn’t going to be satisfactory to you.

The SDMB and any old school message board are cousins to reddit but in most ways a different animal. Like grapefruit and oranges.

I know that reddit isn’t for most people but I am an avid user. I have over 1.75 million combined karma.

Yes but those things you just said only prove the things I was complaining about all along- 1) “there are plenty of them” - Yeah, like I said, 50 or so claiming to be “General Topic,” it’s overwhelming and seemingly arbitrary, 2) “they are mostly semi-secret” - Yeah that’s a problem kinda you know? , 3) “you’ll get invited to them if someone notices you” - Once again you’re perfectly illustrating the trickiness of Reddit that often happens, 4) “which is open to anyone who has accumulated enough karma” - I have no problem not being “a dick”, but karma points as a barrier to General Discussions? That’s a lot to have to arbitrarily earn and stuff.

Don’t think of Reddit as being anything like a traditional message board like this one. It truly isn’t. It’s a hundred thousand little fiefdoms, all under the same banner, all of which have different rules, and there’s nothing preventing 10,000 of them from saying that they are “General Topics.”

Oh yeah believe me I know, but it would be nice if the creators/owners/main runner-s of Reddit would just create one area, easily navigated to by front page of the site, that just has a few little “General Topics” things that are like Reddit For People Who Want A Basic Thing Not A Micro Micro Micro Micro Niche (call it Reddit Sandbox if you’d like ) , and I know now that you guys are going to point out that a place like SDMB already is like that, to which I’ll respond that just as two heads are often better than one, so too posting to multiple message boards is often more thorough a way to learn in life

A reddit forum like that would so quickly be invaded by bots and trolls that it would be useless in a matter of hours. In order for it to work there it needs to be screened but that’s not the purpose of reddit anyway. It simply wouldn’t work there because of its nature.

Another thing where reddit tends to be very good is discussions about tv shows which we also have here but most tv shows aren’t discussed here. Likewise for fans of sports teams.

I started a niche subreddit a few years ago that has nearly 80k members and over 600 posts per month. Two of us are able to effectively moderate it along with the reddit tools.

Welcome to the boards! I apologize I can’t comment about your question, I’m not on Reddit.

Reddit used to be good, until they did their IPO. Once they did their IPO in 2024, the board has gone to shit. They ban people for idiotic reasons, and they take bans way too seriously.

They don’t just ban your user handle. They ban your browser, they ban your IP address, they ban your computer. If you create a new account or use a VPN you are automatically shadowbanned. They take themselves way too seriously.

But on top of that, now that all they care about is the stock price, they just want the board to be as bland as possible to gather data so they can sell it to AI companies.

Similar to here after a ban, kind of. But we don’t have bots banning people. Bans can be appealed and I know many people who have done so successfully.

You probably remember the old days of free for all Reddit. One of the most popular subs was one where people posted pictures on scantily clad teenagers without their consent, subs on how to obtain meth, shoplifting and burglary techniques. I could go on. While the pendulum arguably went too far, a fair amount of it was rightfully done.

Pondering a bit more, the early days of the Dope was also all about being free speech absolutist as long as we didn’t tell how to break laws. We tolerated literal pedophiles, white nationalists and proud anti-semites. Just don’t tell people how to find weed in downtown Chicago or say “fuck you” to someone in the Pit.

Those days are long gone and it was a huge breath of fresh air when many of the old guard left and the new cadre took over. They did away with the last that crap.

…although GD is close to a ghost town, relative to its glory days.

Heh. Over at Reddit, I have something like 4 posts over 8 years and a karma of 2. I do find the discussions useful.

IME it’s extremely unlikely that people downvoted because they thought your question unworthy.

This is that subreddit’s own description of itself:

The Subreddit is dedicated to the understanding, discussion of, and loving of The Bible in all its greatness and everything it has to offer. Join us to learn more about what makes The Holy Bible so great, ask questions about The Bible, and be part of a community of Bible lovers like us!

[my emphasis]

By the sounds of it, you were in a room where substantial numbers of people would only be interested in reinforcing their unconditional love of the Bible and I’m not sure those people would be best described as “earnest”.

I have no knowledge of the culture of that subreddit (beyond it’s description of itself) but I strongly suspect your question caused people to have to think about something they found uncomfortable.

To the op, I have no idea what you are talking about. I have never not been able to post a reply to any sub on Reddit.

The OP isn’t wrong - there are subreddits where you can’t post without a certain amount of existing karma.

Concur. Likewise there are message boards that don’t give you access to certain fora or to send PMs until you have made a certain number of posts.
