So a hip **ster** is something different from a hip **pie** , then? Which one is hipper?

So… Modern hipsters dress to **not** get laid. Interesting.

Include **Reality Bites** on the list. It doesn’t hold up well and it’s far from the best work of anybody involved, but hipness is, by definition, of the moment.

Modern hipsters dress to get laid; it’s just that their way of achieving this involves modern hipster fashions. Same as any other subculture, from any other era.

A bit of a nitpick: yuppies and hipsters are not the same thing. At all.

I have a coworker who dresses just as described: skinny jeans, tight message t-shirt, random scarves, etc. Plus, he’s in a band and has a strange love of Urban Outfitters. We (my other coworker and I) were trying to find a way to describe him, since he vehemently denies being emo (don’t quite see the difference, myself) and describes his band’s music as being “indie-pop”. Hipster, eh? I shall have to remember this and report it to my work buddy.

LOL we had neighbors who came over to a party once, and I told them I could hear their Emo band practicing upstairs. He said, “We didn’t consider it Emo.”, with a look like I had kicked his puppy.

Hippie is a 60s Hipster. A hipster is hipper because they are _de la mode_ whereas a hippy is a throwback to a previous era’s hip.

I think that’s more “indie,” hipsters (again, it’s a heavily mutable term, so it’s sort of “by person”) in my view tend to dress more… mmm… weird, they really like Fedoras and Trench-coats with colorful scarves (though without the scarf they’re probably not), or if they wear colorful beanies (NOT black/dark ones, that’s skater) and/or are white kids with dreadlocks that’s probably hipster as well (going to Burning Man also probably qualifies most people).

Again though, it’s such an easily applicable term its precise meaning means fuckall and your definition is as good as mine. And even with that said there’s a lot of overlap between the scene, indie, emo, and hipster subcultures.

Heh, yup. How they dress and the exact bands they listen to may vary, but these qualities seem to be pretty universal.

FWIW, when I think of “hipster” the first person who comes to mind is Ilan from season 2 of Top Chef, if any of you guys know who that is. The hair, those fucking glasses, the hoodies . . . the _effort_. All of it was a desperate attempt to look nerdy that paradoxically succeeded and failed at the same time.

God I absolutely loathed when looking nerdy became hip. It’s an absolute and complete rejection of beauty. I don’t have a problem with being nerdy, but damn, it’s not supposed to be fucking hip. The trend of nerdiness being hip has lead to some of the ugliest styles, ugliest music, and ugliest art that has ever been conceived.

God I pine for a Romantic resurgence, though the SDMB would probably loathe such a thing. There seems to be a visceral hatred for magical primitivism. But the Romantic era produced the best music, and the best art. Modernism has destroyed the soul, and now art is soulless, form without meaning and meaning without form.

There is nothing along the lines of Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd these days. It’s all this cynical tragically hip self-referential ironic bullshit.

God I fucking hate hipsters. 😛

Maybe this thread should be restarted without the word “hipster” anywhere, so that people can maybe figure out what in the world other people are talking about.

I remember seeing the term “hipster” in Playboy in the 60s; something about “The Happy Hipster…” does something or other. Didn’t make the slightest bit of sense then either, as I recall.

Nah, when this came out it was seen as Hollywood cashing in on the grunge-hipster scene at the time. Recognized as such, it was immediately decried as the faux-hipster tripe it was by us genuine grunge hipsters, who were quick to point out and laugh at all of the stylistic flaws, while simultaneously rationalizing Pearl Jam’s support cameos as being a clever sly wink from the band to the fans that they were playfully mocking the absurdity of it all. The logic being that Pearl Jam paradoxically has an anti-legitimacy presence about them–so the more they seem “sell out”, the more they are actually beating the man at their own game 😉

A good hipster benefit that resulted was that we could now wear our torn jeans and flannel shirts _ironically_ while sneering at the rest of the country as poseurs.

There is nothing a hipster loves more than a good sneer.

I don’t know where you live, but white kid dreadlocks and a wish to go to Burning Man would brand one as the complete opposite of a hipster around here. It’s more like skinny jeans, a small beer belly, 80s skater shirts (too tight), a lumberjack beard, ratty pink converse, and a painter’s cap. Not that all hipsters would wear that outfit, but that outfit would certainly be worn by a current-day hipster.
