I never “like” my own posts, but I often add my gf as who “I’m with”. Our friends don’t overlap that much, and the algorithm seems to make those posts more popular than they otherwise would be.
You’re absolutely right; I had the same realization shortly after I posted, but missed the editing window. Apologies all around for my hissy-fit.
That’s the whole point of the algorithim – it WANTS you to share. It WANTS you to tag others. It WANTS you like posts whether they’re yours or others’. Bonus points if you reply to something. The more you do this, the more activity on your feed.
My experience is no doubt different because I have a lot of friends who are either freelance writers or into something artsy (visual art, theater, etc.) Some of them are deliberately “look at me” because they want the exposure. Others are more retiring but they’ll make public posts if they’re talking about something related to their art.
The on,y person I see liking his own posts in my Facebook feed is someone who is constantly self-promoting one thing or another. It looks pathetically sad when a post of his has been up for weeks and has only one like:his own. So I vote down the self-liking.
I’ll like my own posts, but rarely. Maybe if I am talking about some sort of ice cream I tried that is super delicious, or I share a link to something really exciting (such as the new Muppets TV show!)
I guarantee no one on my friends’ list think I am crass for doing so. They either think I am being silly, or don’t notice it at all.
Occasionally. It’s a good way to tack on “and… loving it!” to whatever status you’ve just posted.
no…lame^3
Exactly.
The problem isn’t that it’s “lame,” “pathetic,” “needy,” “gauche,” etc. I mean–really–could anything about Facebook be so important that you would imbue it with such value judgement?
No. The problem is just that it’s completely gratuitous.
How about posting a status update that your dog got hit by a car? Seems like that would be a post you’d want to share but not necessarily like. I wouldn’t expect friends to like it either.
