Is it okay to have Vegemite sandwiches for tea? Or should one stick to cucumber, watercress, salmon, etc.? ---

Yeah, I agree with **Violet** in that it depends on your guests. Vegemite (and Marmite) are pretty acquired tastes and you may find the ambiance of your tea party is spolit by a spray of damp crumbs issuing from your guestsā€™ pursed lips in the general direction of their host. ---

Not only do I like Marmite sandwiches, I think it makes a splendid gravy! Thereā€™s a UK advert where a beautiful blonde invites a bloke in to her apartment, then starts seducing him. (It certainly got my full attention šŸ˜ƒ ) They kiss, but immediately he breaks away and runs out. The camera drifts away from the disappointed girl to her kitchen, where Marmite is on displayā€¦ ā€¦and the punchline is ā€˜You either love it or hate itā€™! ---

Just finished off my 2.5 kilogram tub of vegemite I got for my birthday last October! Fortunately Iā€™ve got about 1 kilo left in two smaller jars, and some marmite and promite. Anytime is right for vegemite! QtM ---

Actually, I was talking about _me!_ šŸ™‚ I mean, bread and butter with cucumbers are all right; but I loves me some Vegemite! Pity itā€™s so hard to come by around here. (Well, not _that_ hard; but they donā€™t sell it at Albertsonā€™s.) Now that theyā€™ve finished painting and carpeting my apartment, I suppose I could have guests over. Of course, Iā€™m not big on furniture, so weā€™d have to have tea on the lawn. Well, maybe thatā€™s not such a good idea; the neighbours use the lawn as their personal doggie toilets. Well, thereā€™s always the courtyard. Iā€™ve only two small jars of Vegemite left. Almost time to head down to Santa Monica to the British shop for more. ---

No, it is poor form indeed to serve Vegemite sandwiches to guests. A vegemite sammich or vegemite on toast is a very personal thing, and is normally consumed only in the privacy of oneā€™s own homeā€¦(except when you paste it on the kids lunches). In the name of appropriate etiquette, serve cucumber and salmon. But not Vegemite. šŸ˜ƒ ---

Iā€™m sure she meant well, but **LadyDragon** ā€™s link included Chilli con Carne as a suitable item for a teatime menu, so they evidently have a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock at vegemite.com.au. You didnā€™t say you were only catering for yourself **Johnny** , so that changes things considerably. Thereā€™s no etiquette I know of prohibiting you from serving _yourself_ anything you like at tea - even chilli - but be sure you wipe the smears off your chin afterwards. ---

Who has formal afternoon tea??? Okay, I have a few times, but itā€™s usually at some high-falutinā€™ hotel. And no, they did _not_ serve Vegemite. ---

If you want Vegemite yick for tea, knock yerself out. In my own experience (extensive time in Ireland and England), tea is whatever you put on the table. My husband in Irish, so we have tea every afternoon in my house. It can range from beans on toast w/sausages to biccies w/fruit. For example, we had people over today and we had cold sliced beef and ham, tinned salmon, hard boiled eggs, lettuce and tomato salad, bread and butter and homemade chocolate chip cookies. The only real constant is tea. If you want to put on a fancy tea, expect a lot of work. When I do, I make smoked salmon, roast beef and watercress finger sandwiches. Scones with jam and a fruit tart with heavy cream (I would kill to get some double cream in the U.S.) round out the menu. Just please yourself. G. ---

Iā€™ve never had Vegemite for tea, but I have had other savoriesā€“even for a fancy tea, they make a nice, contrasting middle course between the cucumber sandwiches and the sconesā€“and donā€™t see why you couldnā€™t. Granuaile: Do you have a Giant near you? The ones in my area have double Devonshire cream for about $4.50 a jar. Somewhat expensive, but good for a treat once in awhile. If I feel like doing something fancy at home, Iā€™ll make ā€œharlequinā€ egg-and-tomato sandwiches, or double-decked ā€œcheckerboardā€ sandwiches with cucumber and salmon or crab salad. Both are fairly quick and easy, and look nice to impress guests when arranged out on a plate. ---
