They were regular people until they “found the lord” in 1972 while in their 20’s and that changed everything. They got caught up in the whole Azuza Street Pentecostal revival movement and got pulled deeper and deeper into the hate and greed that is Pentecostalism. They both got somewhat disillusioned with the church when pastors were caught cheating on their wives and money was disappearing. They stopped going to church about 10 or so years ago and I think they’re slowly, so slowly, being deprogrammed. It’s how I was raised as well and, honestly, I give a lot of credit to SDMB for my deprogramming. It’s here that I was confronted with my racist, homophobic, anti-science views. I know that I live in a little, liberal echo-chamber but, if I do, it’s because I’ve been one of the other types who thinks Matthew Shepard got what was coming to him, women who died from coat-hanger abortions got what they deserved, Earth is 6000 years old and men are head of the household and so it’s OK for them to abuse their children. So when I hear people like them say they prefer Justin Trudeau over trump, it’s truly shocking and makes me wonder if there is hope for other, hateful people who love having a president who also hates Mexicans, Muslims, immigrants and anyone else the wrong colour.
