Responsible ophthalmologists don’t encourage this kind of thing because it doesn’t work. If it did, they could make a profit from selling it, just as physical therapists make a profit from doing physical therapy.

If the treatment involved regular supervised sessions, optometrists would either have to hire a lot of personnel to help, or else cut way down on their clientele. Or choose not to offer it and just refer interested patients to doctors who did. None of these options would be profitable for the optometrist.

As a former but longtime optician who worked for optometrists and later in the same building as (but not for) ophthalmologists I would add that most OMDs don’t sell glasses or drugs, they only prescribe.

One ophthalmologist I knew told me he wished it did work, because he could make a killing if it did.

More likely, the new personnel hired to help with this would be the ones to profit.

Some optometrists don’t sell glasses themselves; I’m not sure about “most”. Those who do sell glasses and contacts would stand to lose a lot if patients could manage to improve naturally.
