Is it too late in the console cylcle to buy an XBox360?

Actually, he did point out that you can play many of the 360 games on the PC. That’s why he mentioned steam. Since Microsoft kind of owns Windows, that makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?

There’s even a 360 controller for Windows.

So it’s not as if it’s a completely unrelated thing. You can essentially turn a desktop into a 360, just without one or two of the ‘exclusives’ (which generally get ported to PC eventually anyway).
And I’ll just chime in with the rest. In my opinion it’s the perfect time to buy a console. I recently bought a PS3 and I’ve been immensely happy with the purchase, and if I had the spare cash I’d definitely go get a 360 too now they seem to have ironed out the RROD problems.

The only reason not to buy an old console is because current technology has surpassed it IMO. I can’t bear playing PS1/2 games on my HDTV but I can imagine myself quite happily playing my PS3/360 in 10 years time, the catalogue will still be there, although it might be harder to get hold of certain titles (unless they move to digital distribution).

You can pick up a lot of the older (still perfectly good in single-player) Xbox360 titles for a pittance now.

(I’m primarily a PC gamer and I refuse to get involved in PC/console arguments. I suspect most other PC/console gamers are the same).

The first game I ever bought for PS1 was Jet Moto. It’s still fun.

I know. That’s why I said this time it will display multiple colors and it might not give you headaches. Just figured somebody that still has a Virtual Boy might be interested in the 3DS if they hadn’t heard about it already.

This is the assertion that always gets ME in the whole “You could just play those games on your PC!” argument, because it’s either misinformed or deliberately misleading. Yes, you can get your Call of Modern Splinter Warfare fix on the PC - indeed, I suggest that you do so, if possible - and many releases from U.S. companies eventually come to the PC, albiet sometimes with exciting DRM drawbacks (Whoo, Assassin’s Creed 2!) but… of the games in my 360 Library, looking at the ones I own on physical disks, only one out of the whole set can be purchased and played on the PC (Prince of Persia). None of the others are available on the PC, though some can be gotten on the PS3. Similarly, if I glance at my XBLA library, it is almost entirely titles that can’t be gotten for the PC. Indeed, I’m not actually sure any of it can be acquired there.

Maybe I’m a fringe case here, but the assertion that everything except “one or two ‘exclusives’” is availble on the PC is false and misleading, and I wish people would stop presenting it as fact. Maybe all but one or two of the games YOU want to play can be gotten on the PC - which is probably why you recommend it - but please don’t make blanket assertions to this effect. It takes your attempts to be helpful and makes them look like partisan commentary.

Of course, I’m also one of those people who believes that fun is timeless, and I still enjoy the heck out of my PS2 and all kinds of older titles on the PC, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, and so forth. Not even the sheer ugliness of early 3d technology is enough to put me off. (Okay, that’s not true. Some early 3D PS1 titles are never going to get me to try them because I just can’t stand the visuals.)

Just because I like to stir shit up sometimes.

Yes. Can’t believe I wooshed. The console might have been a flop, but I thought that’s what made it memorable.

Man we are getting old, aren’t we?

My parents wanted me to save money. They came up with a brilliant idea: If I saved up half of the money for a big item, they would match the amount.

So, I guess you can say I got my Virtual Boy for half off, and still overpaid.
