I’ve checked the couch cushions - **John Mace** wasn’t there. I’m still in touch with various other long-departed Dopers. Apparently there is this thing called “a life” that some people acquire that causes them to spend less time on internet messageboards. Sounds ghastly. ---

Seems whenever somepne posts a thread saying they’re leaving the board or taking a break there are responses like, \*“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” \*and _“Who are you again?”_ Some of it is joking but I think in general “goodbye threads” are considered ho-hum at best around here. Then we have threads like this where people wish that “missing Dopers” had told us they were going to be away. I think “goodbye threads” should be encouraged, not mocked, because then we know in advance what’s up happening with our buddies. ---

Ones along the lines of “I need to spend more time out in the real world, gotta get away for a while” are received sympathetically. Flounce-off posts full of martyrdom and accusations and other drama get the first kind of response. Both are deserved. ---
