> You know, there is some middle ground. The idea that you should never, ever make any decision that benefits you over your kids is an impossible standard that results in every parent feeling horrible guilt pangs if they ever feel a glimmer of joy.

Exactly. Using this logic, you could guilt a person literally to death about their desire to leave an abusive spouse. A parent who is unhappy is no good for anyone, especially their children.

Anyone who would quit their job, then sit down and try to figure out a business they could start, is an idiot.

Even if you have a viable business plan, it’s probably going to take months or years to start making money, let alone pay off your startup costs. How much money do you have saved to invest in your new business? Zero, right? How many months can you live on zero or negative income? Zero, right?

If you want to start your own business because you hate your co-workers, and bosses, and customers, then get used to hating yourself, your employees, and your non-customers.

Let me add something else to **Lemur866** ’s post.

When I started my business back in November, 1991 (when we drew up the business proposal for the grant to start the business), I did not even feel confident enough to leave my previous job until over a year and a half later, in July 1993, when we were solvent enough to start paying ourselves, and that was with one kid and a house payment. The husband of the OP should have a complete understanding of what he is getting into before he even contemplates leaving his job…better yet, do both if you are physically able to…but with the OP’s description, I don’t think he’s that able to.
