Is my vet lying?

I think it’s on-point. It’s exactly why I would be prompted to call them directly for clarification. It doesn’t make sense to package the vaccine in a preserved multi-dose vial if it’s not viable after a few hours. It should be packaged in single-dose 1ml vials if that’s true. Otherwise, unless the user is a farmer, I cannot imagine any veterinary clinic using that many doses in a day, so it doesn’t make sense. If the instructions are aimed toward rabbit farmers/breeders, it makes more sense as they would be vaccinating litters and might not follow handling and storage protocols like a clinic would.

Thanks for again for your insight SeaDragonTattoo. Will give Zoetis a call.

I think it’s terrible.

Definitions of “good [sterile] technique” can vary widely. Have you heard of the compounding pharmacy problems in the U.S.? It’s horrifying what trusted professionals can do through either ignorance or avarice.

Some material are packed under nitrogen and will be degraded by oxygen; the puncturable cap on the vial is not so effective after it is breached.

Multi-dose vials could be intended for vaccinating several animals at one time, such as at a farm. (Are there bunny farms?)

IANAV but I order human vaccines regularly. We would discard the vaccine after the hours designated.

If the vaccine vial is disinfected after each withdrawal I would be comfortable with using it…until someone tells me it is contaminated.

So sorry to hear about the intentional dispersal of rabbit disease. What the Fibonacci! (My new F word, as my grandchildren a really catching on to Gramma’s bad words)

I hope it wasn’t the kind packed under nitrogen that degrades with oxygen.
And… I know the vials hold 10 doses so I believe they where designed so that people who have commercial meat rabbit farms in Australia could vaccinate lots of rabbits. I talked to a Vet from the UK and there they have other brands of the vaccine and they come in single dose vials. But New Zealand is so small they only have the one brand.

I had this same problem just this morning, I asked at the vet if they do a “rabbit day” for vaccinations and was told they might do one, one day!! when I asked about the vaccinations only being useable for 10 hours after opening, I was told they are valid for a week, so now I’m totally confused. Lots of other rabbit breeders/judges/showers etc seem to think it’s Just 10 hours, so I’d love to know for sure, before spending money on vacc’s that could be useless. I’m also in New Zealand

I have been looking on the internet for any answers Sputnikkk as I too am in NZ, and have found this, hope it helps. Page 2 of http://www.vetcouncil.org.nz/documentation/Newsbrief/2015_June_NewsBrief.pdf
