It seems like the republicans say this about every democratic candidate. No matter what there views are, they suddenly become the most extreme leftist in the history of politics in the minds of many republicans.
Heck, they haven’t even managed to nominate anybody who people in countries with more than two political parties would even call a liberal at all!
Another Old Reliable is that he will cause The Biggest Tax Hike in the Entire History of the Universe. Haven’t seen it yet, but that may be because I don’t watch much television. I’m sure it’s on its way if it hasn’t arrived already.
McCain has been saying that he’s going to “raise your taxes”.
Eh, Kerry got ranked as the “most liberal” senator back in 2003 by the same group (National Journal). It’s just politics.
There are plenty more liberal senators than Obama or Kerry. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, for example, is a Socialist.
Obama is somewhere in the center for the Democratic party, which means you’ll find plenty of Senators more liberal or more conservative than he is. I’m a liberal, and Obama’s a little too conservative for my tastes (although I’ll still vote for him with enthusiasm). Every bit of evidence I’ve seen suggests that he’s practical and cautious, and seeks to find reasonable compromises on most issues rather than taking a hard-line stance.
Lets not forget Lyndon Johnson. He probably created more equality in America than any other President in history.
Yes, he did escalate the war in Vietnam, but that is only because he thought losing would ruin support for his domestic programs.
Which is technically true, if McCain believes that everyone in America makes over $250,000.
You guys forgot that he’s also going to take your guns away.
(Oh, how I long for the day when “liberal” is no longer a dirty word)
I’m a liberal democrat, and here is the list of modern democratic presidential candidates who I personally think are more liberal than Obama:
FDR
Truman
Stevenson
Johnson
Humphrey
McGovern
Carter
Mondale
Dukakis
Gore
Kerry
I think that leaves Kennedy, probably a tie, and Clinton, who was more conservative than most democrats. I think your wife probably is unclear about what a liberal is. Fred Thompson, for reference, is not the sharpest or most honest tool in the shed. The statement is just bizarre unless considered as ignorant or just a lie.
It will be once Democrats stop playing defense when it is used against them and making it their own again.
Of course, when the other side’s got the bigger megaphone, easier said than done.
This could be the year, though! crosses fingers
I’m confused, because when it was pretty much settled that Hilary was going to be the nominee, the talking point was that she was the most liberal. They must have had to chose an absolutely different measuring stick of five completely unrelated votes to make their measurements.
Any democratic candidate is going to be called “most liberal EVAR” by the Repubs, because name calling sadly works in their favor. And even more sadly, “liberal” still comes across at least partially as an epithet, something to be avoided.
When’s the last time we saw a credible Democratic candidate wear the “liberal” badge as proudly as the way Repubs proudly proclaim their “conservatism”?
Gore and Kerry (or recent candidates) were both called “most liberal.” Kerry was called “most liberal senator.” Dukakis, Mondale … “most liberal.” Clinton was even called most liberal as I recall, despite the presence of Jerry Brown.
Meh, usual bullshit.
Obama is not as liberal a candidate as Kerry, Dukakis, or Mondale, and certainly less liberal than FDR or Carter. Some things he’s more liberal on than Gore or Kerry, but not all things.
The confused point here is, people can define “liberal” to mean whatever they want, and then say whomever is it.
EVERY DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IS THE MOST LIBERAL EVER!
Not only is Obama the most liberal presidential candidate ever, he’s the most liberal Senator in the Senate.
I think one of the most impressive feats of the Right-Wing-Hate Echo Chamber has been turning “conservative” into a positive and “liberal” into a negative.

To 110%. Retroactive for the last ten years. I know because I saw it on the tee-vee.

Can you find an example of a time Obama listened to a political opponent, came around to his way of thinking and then took up the issue?
My impression is that Obama will politely hear all viewpoints and then do what he was going to do anyway - but I’m willing to be convinced otherwise.
And by this - I won’t consider noncontroversial positions that have the support of both parties.
If I recall, his proposal for mandatory gay marriages for Eagle Scouts was one that he pretty much had to carry on his own, with very little…actually no support at all, bi-partisan or otherwise. I’ll see if I can think of any other career killing positions he has taken.
Hardly matters if Obama is totally liberal, and aching deep to enact sweeping social programs to mold future generations. The prudent and fiscally responsible conservatives have pissed away all our money. The agenda of the next administration will largely be an effort in triage, stop the bleeding, sew up the open wounds, start a course of antibiotics. Aerobic dance fitness programs will have to wait until the patient can get up on his own to pee, without the stitches breaking open.
Abortions for some, miniature American flags for the others!
