Is Peer-Review Valid?

Thank you, and everyone else who’s offered their opinion. I guess my confusion here has largely to do with the reliability of peer review. I understand that my friend, who seems to think that peer review is worse than professional opinion, is totally wrong, but I don’t quite understand what to think about it. Like, I hold that if a scientific study is published in a reasonably reputable journal and I can’t find anything denouncing it as crap, then its conclusions can be used as a reasonable source. Am I stretching too far?

It would be a reasonable, but not perfect, source. But beyond wheresmymind said, be sure to understand the limitations of the results which will be mentioned in the paper but probably not in any article based on the paper.
