Perhaps in the case of celebrities it is in the same way that steroids are in bodybuilders and other sports or photoshopping magazine images does. It raises the general standard of to truely unattainable levels which forces anyone who wants to succeed to go to more and more extreme measures to meet those standards in a non ending cycle.
