I’ve been googling, but I can’t find any shows.

Is the musical rent being performed anywhere in california between septemeber 16 and september 22?

It doesn’t look like it. It looks like there’s currently only one, non equity, touring company, but it doesn’t look like they’re performing anywhere right now.

If “Rent” is a play, It’s not in NC that I know of.
Sounds interesting though.

Actually, that tour ended this past spring. A new tour (I believe Equity, but I’m not sure) is going to be launched this winter, to coincide with the movie’s release.
