I just moved here a month ago, so I’m no expert. But my wife knows a gay couple here in town. And I drove past the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center the other day, for whatever that’s worth.
It does have a gay scene, I’ve not lived there but I’ve spent some time there for extended business. It’s conservative, but then again, even LA’s gay community is conservative compared to San Francisco
The metro area is over a million so yes, there are gay people, though not as many as normally you would find in a million plus metro area, simply because San Francisco is so close many people that would normally stay in a good sized metro area, move due to San Francisco.
You might also want to ask this question over at City-Data (Dot) Com, it’s a great place for people who seek info about cities.
that’s not good hehe
Thanks for the info guys. I’ve heard Davis is nice too…I’ll have to see. I figure if I hate it I can look for other tech jobs in San Fran. I still think Sacremento is going to be an upgrade from Buffalo NY.
Thanks for that site Mark,
It still sounds better than Buffalo-warm weather, more culture, more people, close to cool stuff, and a bigger gay and technology population. I think moving there as a first step, and maybe eventually to san fran if I hate it might not be so bad.
Dubai is hotter than the surface of the Sun, but is more comfortable than Sacramento in summer.
Well Stockton itself and San Joaquin lends itself tends bluer for several reasons. Stockton like Davis is a college town. It also has 580, Hwy 4 and Hwy 12 leading directly into Stockton proper, so it has it’s share of insane commuters going back and forth to the Bay Area everyday. Tracy, and points south, as well a few other communities including my own are essentially bedroom communities for the East Bay. It does get redder in a hurry once you get north of Stockton and east of say Modesto.
The local paper is the Sacramento Bee. Their site looks like a hick town paper. There’s life, but not obvious.
Remember a heart-warming story a few months back of an old guy who bought a stack of 45’s (records) and found they had stickers with his mother’s name and old address on them? Wasn’t that a sweet little story?
That glurge was the sacbee’s most-clicked story EVER.
Just a warning…
Since the state government has imploded, there are lots of unemployed tech types - but there is a market. Just over-saturated at the moment
One of my favorite Sacto sites:
Old Sac is very cool.
And there’s always the River Cats!
Driver8 got it spot on, I think. I’ve been here two years and while I won’t say I love it!!! I will say I am enjoying the hell out of it. I have had some great meals here. I love the fact that I’m so close to SF and Napa/Sonoma. Also, not mentioned yet is Lodi/Paso Robles for wine. All the goodness without the trappings of Napa. Mid-town has a gay contingent. Arden Arcade has a great game store. I’ve found a hairdresser who works miracles. All in all I would say cool is a hard find in Sacto, but it can be found if you look for it.
