Is Sicily a good place to go scuba diving? One source says that the Mediterranean “has largely been fished out through over zealous spear fishing.” I went to Mallorca last year and while the water was wonderful, it was almost devoid of life, mostly empty sea, which seems to confirm that statement; I saw a lot more of interest while snorkeling by the beach. Would I expect to have more fun in the Canary Islands or in the Adriatic?

Canary Island imports fish nad the Adriatic is dead too. If your purpose for scuba diving is seeing living things, the Med is not the place to go.

May I suggest Thailand?

SCUBA in Sicily. There’s gotta be a good “Cement Flippers” joke somewhere.

Plus “You need SCUBA gear to see the Sicilian navy!”

You may. But that’s about $1,700 more than I have, not to mention my travel companion, who is a student.

We’re going to Sicily because that’s what we can afford. We have the kind of super-cheap ticket where you might end up in a dingy town in a dingy hotel in a room that has no bathroom or shower.

Well, this explains the lack of society-wide European panic about Caulerpa taxifolia in the Med… If it’s already a dead zone…

[stupid american joke]But hey, it’s Sicily! Sicilians love to have people swim with the fishes![/saj]

Sicily is a great place. I had the great pleasure of living there for two years.

If you can get there cheaply, I’d go just to see the place, and save diving for another trip somewhere else if it is not good there.

As always, YMMV. If you do decide to go, I can give you some tips.
