Is Social Security Racist?

CKDexrHavn:

I have no idea what the law is today, but as recently as about 1980, Railroad Retirement was still a separate system, run by the government but independently of Social Security. (My grandfather and my uncle were retired career employees of the New York Central.) Anybody got more current data?

Teachers are not subject to the SS. (At least in California.) Ministers may not be either.

I think the key, as someone pointed out is how life expectancy is defined. In fact, I suspect that those making the stink are confused about how life expectancy is defined. I would suspect that your average black man has slightly less life expectancy than a white man once he hits about 40 years old.

Hey Ike, I’ve been around, just not posting too much.

I wonder how it ever became the government’s job to make sure that we all were taken care of. Social security seems to make the recipients wards of the state. Didn’t humankind do pretty well without it for most of our existence?

I do not like the idea of the Federal Gov’t imposing itself as my socialist investment banker. No, that would not be my first choice.

Do the words, “Ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of librty to ourselves and our posterity” ring any bells?

Yeah, but it only seems that way. Take advantage of whatever retirement plan you have at work and you don’t much have to worry about it.

Well, we enjoy better health, prosperity, reduced infant mortality and safety now than at any time in human history, but it has nothing to do with SS; and, conversely, the absence of SS had nothing to do with it before.
