Yet another reminder that i am apparently out of the cultural loop. I’m not a big cartoon watcher…except for the Wiggles show that my daughter watches while I’m chowing down my breakfast. I have occasionally caught brief snips of SpongeBob SquarePants. Apparently there is a, for lack of a better phrase, gay subculture that some see with [SpongeBob](http://online.wsj.com/article_email/0,,SB1034028869241478240,00.html) Is this true…or just some schtick that the WSJ fell for? Curious dopers want to know. ---

I don’t really care if he is or not, I adore him! I’ve got the theme song and the fun song and I sing them at the top of my lungs almost daily. My SpongeBob Square pants pants (lifted from hubby) are the comfiest pair of jammies I own. I have a SpongeBob and Plankton alarm clock that sings the fun song as well. I need to get the aqarium and I am jelous of Persephone and her SpongeBob lunch box! I need to get my butt out to Hot Topic and pic up the sweat shirt that I was eyeing today. “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea…” Come on you guys know the words!!! Don’t worry Dave I’ll come over and teach the Walking One all about the wonders of SpongeBob and all the lovely songs that go with it.😃 ---

No Spongebob merfchandise here but I’ll admit he’s pretty cool. I never picked up on Spongebob’s flamboyance but my gadar is pretty lame. I think it’s from exposure. The church I go to is very open. We’ve got a lot of Lutherans in comfortable shoes. Anyway, even a straight guy can like SBSP. His innocent goofiness plays well agsinst the grumpy characters. I think it was created to be _Ren and Stimpy_ but nice. ---

It all started with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. “Let’s see who can come up with the wackiest, zaniest, most unlikely idea for an animated hero! First one to star a night-stalking prepubescent postal-worker paramecium wins!” Die, little yellow kitchen utensil. I’d rather watch MisterJaw host a six-hour Snorks retrospective featuring frequent color commentary from Chim-Chim. (IMHO, a’course.) ---

Funny, I _live_ in the neighborhood the WSJ cites, and I _shop_ at Roger & Dave, and I hadn’t particularly noticed SpongeBob any more than a zillion other pop-culture things in their stores (there are actually two of them, one on 7th at 17th and the other on 8th at 21st). But I’m willing to believe that the SpongeBob items are flying out the door. And there is a certain sweetness about SpongeBob that for many of us fags remind us of ourselves as not-entirely-gender-appropriate kids, even if we’re all muscled up now. More than anything else, this looks like a typical New York media story: “I spoke with four of my friends, and they all said that they know gay boys who are into SpongeBob. It’s a trend! Let’s write an article!” :rolleyes: ---

Naw, he is totally hot for Sandy, Doncha remember how he split his pants trying to impress her? He was terrified that Larry was going to get her. Why yes, I do have small children and the SBSP DVD, why do you ask? They force me to play the theme song on the tinwhistle at the beginning of every episode. ---

I seriously think folks are just looking too deep into a cartoon. Don’t get me wrong: I love Spongebob and watch it frequently. I just think it’s a funny cartoon that I can watch _without_ worrying about political correctness and racism and other stupic crap that doesn’t belong in a cartoon so it isn’t there since Spongebob is a cartoon!
