I don’t think Musk is that in touch with reality. He’s always been a bloviating jackass back to the early days of SpaceX who is really impressed with himself even though he is clearly just repeating things other people have said to him, often without good comprehension. He was a very early user of Twitter and would twitch out things that he would subsequently have employees fired for confirming or discussing. He wants to be in charge, but he doesn’t have the patience to actually sit down and learn how things work, and I’m sure his stock buyback of Tesla was a result of a combination of other companies performing massive stock buybacks and wanting to get away from analysts rooting around Tesla’s financing. SpaceX has been very closed about its financials and many of the statements that have been made about their costs are borderline nonsensical, but since there is no requirement for public reporting there is no way to factually refute them.
