Here’s why I find Magellan’s position so baffling… he seems to think that: (1) if gay marriage becomes legal, straight people will get married less (2) straight people getting married less is bad What I don’t see is any evidence, or even any logic, for (1). Evidence-wise, I feel like the burden of proof is on Magellan if he’s the one trying to deny people rights. And logic-wise, I feel like logic is AGAINST him. So a young person (who is straight) grows up and has an uncle Bruce and uncle Jack who are in love and live together. Which is more likely to cause that straight person to think that marriage is something valuable and worthy… if Bruce and Jack ARE married or if they are NOT married? It’s so obviously the first in my view that it just baffles me that anyone could disagree. If you want someone to value marriage, then it should be something that they see as many positive models of as possible, and you do NOT want them to see people who are committed and together but NOT married, lest they model their behavior on that. (There are also a host of other problems with Magellan’s position, particularly including the issue of separate-but-equal, but the above is one that just seems like a complete slam dunk.) (And I’m not at all certain that I agree that we should base our policies on whether they increase or decrease the rate of straight marriage… but if we do, then I think legalizing SSM is just clearly the correct choice.) ---

RitterSport Yes, I guess you are. (The feelings one has for either gender are most certainly not a choice, they simply are; the butterflies that hit you in the gut are not a choice, they are just there. The choice is whether or not one acts on such feelings. Martina Navratilova on Gay Marriage 90% of gays are atheists.) (That is why I will fight this to the death, because it’s actually more serious than death!!! As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.) ---
